Hi folks, finally able to tax my slk230 today after waiting for insurance and went to my friends house who i bought the car off and the battery was flat, so managed to start it via jump leads and all was ok,left it there for 15 mins, then drove home which took another 20 mins, but when i got home i went to start it up again and i dont think it managed to charge properly, now being a novice under the bonnet and not really knowing my way around a car can someone advise me please?

My friend says the battery is only 3 months old, so is a full overnight charge the best way?

Charge

I have never so much as opend a bonnet before so i shall look in to what i need to do and remove it and charge it, i supppose i need some sort of battery charge kit plugged in to the mains etc?

Saying that i am not to bad if i know where to look etc.so argos in the morn for a £29 charger and 20 hours later:)

Yes you will need one,, most of the common ones are automatic, though I do not recomend them it is OK on a SLK, it will find its own charging level and be safe to use. It is safer to do it disconnected from the car

If it's been flat for a while it may be toast.

How did you start the car to go to your friends?

Charge it up and look for bubbling in the cells and see if it holds charge. If it bubbles or won't hold charge then it's u/s.

bubble?

The car was actually my friends car, i bought it from him.
He used jump leads to start it.
I don't fully know what you meant by look for bubbles....

Batteries do bubble when charging well

Strange thing was that on the way home the indicators stayed on instead of flashing, but after 15 mins they were ok:)

The cars been very well looked after by my mate and has only done 1000 miles since service:)

The battery was far too low I think, the indicators are part of the alarm on a SLK. Nothing can re set correctly at under 11.75 volts. you should be OK

Agree. Sounds like it needs a good charge.

slk230

Thanks guys, very helpfull:)
Getting the charger tomorrow, will take the battery out(hopefully easy)and charge it for 20 odd hours etc and should be ok, i will post some pics in the correct sections when all is well.Looking to make this special, deffo after wheels and a remote roof open toy:)

It has full AMG kit but only a single exaust on the rear, i think real amg has two pipes?

Many thanks to all:)

Don't bother taking it out, just disconnect the negative lead.

If i need to charge it from the mains for 20 hours then i might need to remove it>?Sorry if that sounds dumb but i'd not know the difference.

Good luck with the battery. The AMG version is the SLK32, which has a supercharged 3.2 litre V6.

battery

Deffo going to remove the battery me thinks:)
Cardiff's not the place for anything being left anywhere, not even a bag of sweets:)

When you say he used jump lead's to start it was that a one time thing?

If the battery is young then i agree with the other's just pop it out and give it a good charge (check and adjust the fluid levels if you can but a young battery should not need this doing really check it anyways tho).

Remember to secure the car as best you can after you remove the battery.
