Hello all,

Just bought my first Mercedes a, E 240 Elegance (2000 W). The car seems to make a strange noise when accelerating. Sounds normal when at a contsant speed or idling, but when accerating sounds similar to a ford with a tappet problem, or maybe an airy rattle. Anyone got any ideas? Is it something common and normal? I hope Im being paranoid. Can anyone recomend a reliable mechanic near Glasgow or Elgin to give it a once over?

Thanks in advance

Could you say where that sound is coming from? (front/back)?

Its coming from the drivers side, at the front, sounds near to the wing mirror.

Unless you are willing to take a deeper look into the problem yourself, its best to take it to an independant specialist to get it diagnosed. People can suggest things on here, but u'll only really know whats wrong if someone who knows what they're doing inspects it.

I didnt think it was a problem until the wife got in the car. Was planning on getting a mechanic to look over it, just wondered if there was a common problem. Cheers for replying.

what kind've sound does it make? does it restrict your revs at all? it could be the MAF (Air flow meter/sensor) but i'd only be guessing.

Could be several things. Exhaust or catalytic converter heat shields rattling or maybe a cracked or loose exhaust manifold?? Best to get it up on a ramp for a prod around. T J ONeil in Carntyne Glasgow get a good name

The car revs and accelerates really well, but I dont have any experience so have no points of reference. The rattles of the exhaust could explain it but I think its too far forward. Cheers both of you.

Cracked manifold is a possibility, or leaking at the exhaust joint.
