Hopefully there will be someone along soon who actually knows about these things, in the meantime here is my opinion based upon experiences with BMW control modules.
I would be highly suprised if a loose bulb caused a control module to behave in this way (bet the next post from Miro says that this is exactly how the CM behaves if there is a loose bulb ) they are pretty clever at managing typical faults and preventing them from taking an entire function down (All indicators - six in total on both sides of the car - not working because of a loose bulb? I doubt it).
This behaviour does sound like a faulty control module. Harking back to my BMW experience - can you make any connection between the performance of the indicators and the weather? The indicators on my E39 BMW would cease functioning (along with some other lights and displays all controlled by the same CM) if it had been raining. Water was getting into the boot and dampening the wiring loom (the CAN bus, I think). This caused the CM to play up. Whenever we had a dry spell, all was well. When it rained, the indicators went AWOL until it was dry and sunny again.
EDIT: Could water be getting into the boot or perhaps somewhere else?
