Hi first hot day and it looks the air con is not working!

So I have three options

Do it my self and get the kit from halfords
About £40-60.

Pay ats or quick fit to do it about £50-60

Or go to a Mercades dealer? Any idea how much?

What's my best option?

Sytner Club is doing £49 re-gas and ani-bac treatment offer at the moment.
Just sign in for your Club membership (free) at your local Sytner Mercedes:

I called in to an ats on the way home £45 40 minutes later all sorted

Had re-gas on mine less then a month ago and all was well. Note this morning that drivers side is, I suppose, okay. Passenger is warm - so not working.

Am guessing the gas has all leaked out and will need to be investigated. Where this will be done I have, as yet, not thought about.

Is there anything I should check out before getting it looked at ? System reset or something.

If you have a leak, most likely cause is lack of use in Winter. Otherwise, it will be the condenser, a hose or the worst scenario, Evaporator.

You should have the system leak tested with OFN and most garages do not have this facility. You would need a Specialist.

If you have a slow, difficult to detect leak, then dye is the next best step.

Never had car during winter. 6 weeks ago h d a big service at MD. Obviously, not one of the things they check. I will need to locate a specialist a little better than the local Kwik Fit, I guess.

Definitely sounds like a leak and it should not be knowingly filled if it is.

This is still relevant

My ATS said they will test first and if it has a leak they will stop there and not redeem the voucher, giving me a chance to get it fixed if needed (was not required in the end)

Aye, I know the rules.

Specialist it will be. Doubt I can do anything till Tuesday anyhow. Will check about on internet for some place around Bristol, Swindon or Cheltenham.

Assuming everything in good order and no leaks how long should a re-gas last.

^Mine was still blowing pretty cool when I had it re gassed two weeks ago at Olly's. It hadn't been touched in the 3 years I've had the car.

If the system has a leak, the machine will detect it under the vac test and will stop the process before it gets to recharging with gas and pag oil

My Vauxhall Omega never needed a re-gas during the 7 years I had it. And I asked the dealer to check the aircon when servicing the car .

My Renault was sold at 8 years old and never re-gassed. My Kia is 6 years old. My Merc is 8 years old. Neither have ever been re-gassed.

The gas does escape over time, but if you make a point of running the aircon during the winter months then the seals are kept lubricated and the gas escape minimal.

There would be some degradation in performance over the years but I check it with a thermometer - 4 to 7 degrees at the air vent at max cooling is fine.

Umm! I may be covered by AA Gold....worth a try I suspect.

AA Warrenty tells me 'take it to the Halfords Auto centre in Cirencester, sir'. We came to an agreement....Mercedes Swindon :-) Though they cannot diagnose till 23rd June...then need AA to say ok and rebook to fix. That'll be Christmas then !

Slightly OT but keeping in with the discussion, I received a 'summer health check' email from MB today, they haven't wasted time after the Spring health check. Previous freebie was wiper blades, for this summer promotion it's Free air conditioning treatment* (*see website for more details)

I wonder if this is a regas? Anybody shed some light on it?

The Spring health check ran until today so hopefully they will update their website tomorrow with the details

"You can also choose to upgrade your Summer Health Check with a full air conditioning system check and re-gas for just £69* which includes:

• Air conditioning system gas replacement and recharge, including lubricating oil

• Air conditioning function and efficiency checks

• Air conditioning leak test"

Ha, wishful thinking earlier

A 'refresh treatment' I wonder what that is?

Not even worth it for me as I'm wondering if my system is working properly, I'd have to pay them the £69 just for them to be in the position to check it all over :(
