He air is being used now that it's warm. It blows cold well enough but it seems to be making a sort of whistling "surging noise" .... It does it about every five seconds. Any experience here on the forum or am I on new ground with an original fault?

Thanks in advance.

Thats how they are. Mine has done that for years so I assume thats how they are. I had MB check the aircon over at its service this year and it was given a clean bill of health

It does seem to whistle a little bit - that's what combines with the surging to concern me a bit...

Any others have this?

I've got no AC in my current car, and I don't miss it at all having experienced expensive failures in most of my older cars in the past.

If yours still blows cold when you ask it to then I'd say you were ahead of the game, regardless of whistles or coughs. Just save it for the 4 days a year in England when you actually really need it! Until then, tilt the sunroof, stick your elbow out of the window, and save a bit of petrol... happy days.

RKC-benz, It's 99% the problem with the heater fan. It's bearings become noisy with time. You could try to buy a pair of new bearings, or just buy another Fan from used parts dealer. ;)
See how it looks like below
