Hello all,

I have a W124 300E from Decmber 1992, in which the air conditioning has never worked during my ownership.

I would now like to get his rectified, and I wondered if anybody had used Aircon Direct http://www.ac4cars.co.uk/ before and could recommend them.

Secondly, does anybody know if my 300E would have the older R12 refrigerant or the newer R134a refrigerant, and how easy is it to convert the older type to the newer type?

Many thanks in advance for your help,

KK

I have a 1991 300E - I used Air Con in Bath - like yours, the aircon hadn't been used for years and we thought it just required a re-gas - then we found that several bits weren't working (including the compressor) - in the end, it cost about £1000 to get the aircon working - the good news is that it has been working faultlessly for the past 3 years. I consider that to be a good investment (well - my wife does!) - just be aware of what it can cost to get it going!

There was something about the coolant - I think he just re-gassed using the newer coolant, no conversion necessary - but I can't recall in any great detail - I just know it works now
Cheers

This is going by what was told to me by an air con tech when I had my 1991 W124 air con sorted out.

The R12 and R134a gases cannot be mixed.

You can have a different gas pumped in (Which mine has had for 2.5 years now) which isn't affected by the older gas and this will be fine. It is more expensive though.

I wont need my system converting to the new gas ever.

Dave!
