Greetings one and all,

Apologies if this should have gone in Interior, but the problem is definitely in the engine compartment.

It began a couple of weeks ago with a mysterious low speed rattle, most obvious at around 1000 rpm. I couldn't diagnose it then, but now I know that's because I turned everything off, the better to try and hear where it was coming from.

Yesterday I had the aircon on for the first time in a while, and it didn't work, so I assumed it just needed regassing. Today I tried it again whilst parked up. It didn't work but the rattle was back. After about 5 mins of turning things on and off in sequence there's no doubt it's the aircon.

As soon as you hit the EC button (red light off) and the aircon tries to kick in, then the rattle stops. Ease the revs up to 1000 and it's very pronounced and unpleasant sounding. Over 1000 and it disappears completely, returning as the revs drop. Hit the EC button again (red light on), and it disappears completely.

I'd be most grateful for a more scientific diagnosis, likely cost of repairs, probable cause too, if anyone has an idea. Did I hit a speed hump too hard?

Anyway, thanks very much in anticipation of someone out there knowing precisely what's wrong.

It sounds like the compressor or bearings are shot.
