AMG A35 Owners Thread

An A35 puts, what, 300bhp through the front wheels?
50% wear for 5000 miles seems reasonable.

Thanks all, first time I've had a car of this level of performance so maybe didn't do my homework.

Found like for like tyres at Kwik kit, £120 each fitted, balanced etc so not too drastic.

Potential new A35 owner here.
I'm currently looking for a new car to replace my 2015 370z Nismo.
Although I still love the looks of the car, I need something more practical with back seats as well as similar or better performance.

I've only ever had Jap performance cars, my previous cars were 2008 WRX STI, 2002 WRX, 2000 Civic Jordan, 1995 Celica.
This is my first foray into German territory.

My budget is around £35k and I've considered many cars in that range, RS3, M2, M3, M4 CLA45 and the A45.
I decided I wanted AWD, so that ruled out any BMs, and plus I really don't like their interiors.
Still on the fence with the RS3.
Although I'm not a huge fan of hatchbacks, I prefer the A45 to the CLA45, which to me just looks a bit weird, a coupe should be 3 doors imo.

So I narrowed it down to the RS3 and the A45.
In an ideal world I would get the 2020 A45 or A45s, but that's way over my budget.
But then I started watching reviews of the FL A35 and saw a few night drive videos where I literally fell in love with the ambient lighting. The cockpit is such a nice place to be!

Although I never considered the A35 before this, and granted, the RS3 and A45 will blow it away performance wise, for my money I can get a very low mileage almost new car with that amazing ambient lighting, compared to a relatively high mileage RS3.
The performance of the A35 is comparable to my previous 370z and even the STI, so I'm guessing that should also keep me happy?

1. Just wondering if anyone has moved from a PFL A45 to a FL A35, or even chosen the A35 over the PFL A45. Would be interested to hear about your thoughts over this decision.

2. How does the exhaust sound on comfort and Sports+, I like to be able to hear my car. My 370z is quiet as fook, but the STI was lovely with that boxer.
Do you get pops and bangs in Sports+?

3. I've seen a couple of A35s on Youtube with the AMG Recaros. Does anyone know roughly how much it would cost from Mercedes to get them fitted to a used car? I love the seats in the A45!

4. Cars I'm looking at are 2019 with mileage between 7-10k. Will look to get it serviced at MB. What would be required at this service interval, and any rough estimates on cost so I can factor it in to the purchase.

3. Retrofitting the seats from the A45 or A45S - bought new from Mercedes - to a used A35 will cost around the same as buying a whole A45, or refurbishing a cruise ship. Seriously, once paid for it will be to close in total cost to a A45 to be justifiable.

4. First service is an A-service with no additional items and so it will be the least expensive service the car will ever have: varies considerably by dealer but they coextensive £300-400, or less if they will accept you supplying your own oil. Buy the oil from the parts counter for £60 ish for 20 ish and save what’s left for next time.

I have owned an A45 and now have an A35. You have hit the nail on the head. It has a lovely cockpit, drives very well, and in sports plus makes a nice noise with some not OTT overrun pops. I have owned many cars and this is probably the best I have had from an all around perspective. There is nothing I don’t like about it, from performance, to seat comfort, to sound system to looks. At this price point very hard to beat. EVO magazine had one on the fast fleet in yellow, identical to mine, worth noting that at the end of the months of ownership by one of their writers he said he had been won over and would include it in his fantasy garage in the hot hatch category.

One would assume its those seats he wants and not the std seats. Personally I find the std seats more comfortable, love the ambient lighting and the kids pad holders fit well in the gap.

I was under the impression those WERE the Standard Seats, all I did was Google Mercedes A35 Seats!
Nope. Same as the AMG line I believe.

Me too. The fancy pants seats look incredible, but I can’t get along with them unfortunately, and for regular and long distance I need to be comfortable.

Personally I can't get on with these seats because the headrest slopes forward too much. With the seat in a proper position it feels like it's pushing your head forward unnaturally so it forces you to run the seat too reclined to compensate.

Yes agree this photo of you shows us these headrests might hinder you and your ladies images (8).jpegcomfort.

I'm currently torn between an 2019 A35 and a 2018 C43, both similar price.
Anyone able to convince me to pick an A35?

For me:
A35
More sporty look with the aero kit but may be a bit too boyracer (however I'd want the aero kit if I were to get one)
Love the ambient lighting and like above, is one of the main reasons why I am considering it, looks so futuristic at night!
Probably cheaper to maintain
I'm guessing the handling is better and probably more fun to drive since it's more agile?

C43
Classy looks, but a bit too executive for my preference
Better quality interior and seats
Better sounding V6 engine

In your opinion, which would keep its value better?

First don't buy to sell, however, I appreciate TCO is very important. I came from a C250d AMG line Premium Plus night edition 4 matic, to the A35. So fully loaded best spec C class (dark wood, blue paint). It was a C43 lookalike.

And interior, exterior the AMG A35 blows the C class IMHO out of the water...and interior wise it doesn't feel much smaller, if anything the styling creates space. The handling is sublime and the way it goes is unreal.

I did have a C43 and C63 on the shopping list but they are very common in Glasgow and don't look sufficiently unique against their amg line stable mates. And I basically wanted a hot hatch. The wife has the family bus (X5 40d) so the A Class is a perfect size. Plus it fits perfectly in the garage so no fear of it being targeted at night.

My Votes A35, unless you live near me then buy a C43. Don't want the A35 becoming too common. 😉

Another potential owner looking at an A45 and an A35.
Quick question, I noticed on the A35, there are buttons for suspension and to open and close the exhaust valves.

On the A35, these buttons are just blank. Is there no option to open/close exhaust valves. Would like the option of being able to make the exhaust quieter when going home at night but louder for when I'm out on the B roads.

Yes just put it in comfort mode

Basically the exhaust really only pops and bangs in Sport plus mode.

We have both. You should test drive both and see which you prefer. My partner has the A35 and I have the facelift C43 (385bhp).
He bought the A35 before I bought the 43. He wishes he had bought a c43.
As a passenger in the A35, I always feel sick at the bumpy ride. It's ok on the motorway but travelling locally, twice this week, I felt very sick with the shaky ride on our local lanes. I had forgotten (with lockdown and lack of use) that we take my car if it's a trip on local roads and we used his a35 by mistake. This wasn't throwing it around, it was steady, sensible driving.
They sound very different. The c43 has a better sound. It's my 3rd c class and nothing like the smaller engines.
You should test drive both. The c class is sporty but comfortable and sounds better if you like a v6.
Ps you said you like the ambient lighting in the 35. The 43 has it depending on the level you buy
Im sure you will love whichever you choose
