Not sure Thermal Efficiency is a good comparison between the two different types of engine.

But from what I have seen in 2018 the best road cars were 45% TE with the average being around 30%. In the Electric space, the best are in the 98% TE range with average being around 90%

Agreed - but served a purpose by illustrating where the losses for ICE are and how EV is spared them.

Does the above include the battery or just mechanical drivetrain?

And now we are so far off-topic - does anyone know engine operating strategy for range extenders? Eg, constant rpm, varying rpm with load etc, and what is a preferred generator input rpm? Or, to put it another way, if you were tasked with designing an engine for a RE, which part of its operating regime would you prioritise?

Getting silly eh lol :wallbash:

I'm keeping this thread on topic.......barely! haha

But not necessarily to many of the younger generation who have grown up to see AMG as both a styling arm which can also have a performance element. The AMG thoroughbred view is just going to be more and more watered down in a similar way the M-Sport has done to the M series for BMW and the S-Line has done to the RS series for Audi. As the market for the thoroughbred shrinks, the more that they will use the branding to sell to the masses. It won't be long before the AMG badge does appear on the boot (and not just wheels / floormats etc) from the factory on styling models.

Personally my AMG styled car is debadged and I wouldn't put an AMG badge on it, but if others feel they want to then that is up to them. Most others won't care (and don't know there is a difference between AMG styled and AMG engined) and those that do care will probably get wound up over it (for 5 seconds), some even confrontational (hopefully a very small minority). Watched someone have a right go at someone recently trying to mock them over the badges they had put on their car. Got most upset when he got told to get a life and stop being a bully.

Well yeah but what to the younger generation know? ;);)

It is true that with AMG models originally being the high end, performance models the badge has inevitably been watered down to appeal to those who wouldn't/couldn't buy full fat AMGs. Same as you say goes for the S Line and M Sport models.

I think the thing that gets me more is not so much the styling options, if Mercedes offer AMG styling packs, it is what it is. It's the faking of AMGs that I find a poor show.

Someone choosing an AMG private plate on low spec E Class is as bad as sticking an M5 badge on what is clearly a diesel.

Ironically though I'd never refer to my CLS63 as 'The AMG' as I think it's a bit cringeworthy so I guess I see faking an AMG as up there in the same way.

I know someone who had a CLK AMG Sport who insisted their car was an AMG to the extent that they put super unleaded fuel in the car as they had read that AMG's needed super unleaded fuel.

Every car should have super unleaded.
Unless it's a diesel, in which case it should have super diesel :D

Just out of curiosity and in danger of being flamed.
What are the thoughts then on 1970's & 1980's era Mercedes that have an AMG bodykit and/or wheels (but no engine mods by AMG) that wear AMG badges.

The Mercedes 190E 2.3 16V from that era had an AMG engine cover on a Cosworth engine if I remember correctly from the factory. So does that make it a fake?

In the limit, if the car wasn't built by AMG, it's not a 'real' AMG.
Does that really amount to a hill of beans? Don't think so.
I think it's sufficient justification to wear AMG livery, if the car has been supplied that way by MB and has truly bonkers performance.
Badging up an asthmatic fake is all a bit meh!
But, if it's my car and that's what I want to do with it, bite me!
If it's your car and that's what you want to do with it, it's none of my business. However I reserve the right to have a quiet chuckle to myself.

Don't like the badging? Don't buy it.
Don't like someone else's badging? Look the other way.

ON TOPIC!!!!!!!!!

Some REALLY sad people about!! Christ its a poxy badge!! Get lives, read somebody confronted someone over a badge!!! Really! does this tell us something about Merc drivers?? You could put a 2 foot amg badge on the rear boot! I would not give a sh&t!! Your car not mine, rant over!!

Steady on, you'll give yourself a heart attack.

For what its worth, doesn't bother me what anyone puts on the back of their car. If its a diesel, its not an AMG as far as I'm concerned.
Does it matter?........No.

It had a Cosworth twin cam head on an MB block. AMG did an after market power pack for the heads which included a spark plug cover with, AMG Power Pack, embossed on it, funnily enough. Talking of false badging. My 190 16v had Cosworth badges from an Escort Cosworth stuck on both front wings and for some strange reason, the glovebox lid! They were never badged, or called Cosworth by Mercedes.

I don't have a problem with it. I was just asking has MB extended their AMG range to some lower spec engines. As I was having a discussion on a FB page with a guy and his E220d. He said hes black AMG badge was factory fitted.
So I came along here to ask the question as seams there's a lot of knowledge on this forum!
I couldn't give a toss if it had a damn RS badge..... just asking about the AMG range.
Obviously opened a whole can of worms in the process!:wallbash::rolleyes:;)
