I think they are/were but the plaque only started being put on in '03 models on. Same as, e.g., quad exhaust: was one side dual on the early w209 55's, and then became quad later ('05 i think).

Build quality I don't see being any different. But I don't think most people looking to pick up an AMG model over any other is looking so much at "quality" as at substance - as has already been explained re the extra power/braking/handling/appointments. AMG is about the total package IMO, and I'm more than happy with mine. Even the quality has been great, although I've only had it a little over a year (and about 20k km) at this point.
