AMG performance *Controversial post warning*

You touch on a good point, what would you give up to own an AMG? if you have the disposable income and a passion for great cars then it's simple, go buy one! However for many of us it's that balance of passion for great cars vs disposable income and family priorities.

This is a great thread and every point of view is valid. I wish I could afford to buy and run an AMG but I know almost all of it's performance would be wasted. Would just be lovely to have though.

all definitely great reasons to have and not have one (or more than one in the case of some).

All my cars have to have a duality of purpose, ie 4 seats at least, sufficient practicality , safety , reliability and then pleasure to drive at around the speed limit (handling , sound etc). A nice looking car is optional only. This usually means only a subset of cars fit that bill. I recently got rid of a car I really liked because it missed out on one factor (not being able to deal with those who think it is okay to be in the wrong lane at a traffic light...)

I used to debadge cars before and my first AMG was also debadged. So a sleeper appeals more to me than a flashy car. It usually helps if the car has some redeeming feature that makes it special at least in my eyes. I'll never own cars that some of my friends own, ie super cars so I'll never have bragging rights there. But it is always great to discuss cars because at present , this is my only hobby as all my spare time goes on my young family.

Part of the joy is doing the research (articles, forums , YouTube etc) and searching for the vehicles and doing test drives. The realisation even with a healthy dose of man maths, that the cost doesnt justify the benefit. Then more man maths like this one is only 4 ltr so will be very economical compared to a 6 ltr. it has warranty so that justifies the depreciation etc etc. The sensible person within then rightly states that your mortgage could be 70k lower ... etc

Speed limits do mean that you cant really do 150mph on a motorway, sure, however, that doesnt mean you cant use a chunk of power at lower speeds and enjoy punishing your tyres and esp. Also it is a thrill to get used to trying to master the gas pedal and in the UK that means in regularly varying weather conditions adds some interest when you're doing 15k miles on the road a year...

Interesting you should write about this OP.

This morning I awoke from a dream where I had swapped my M6 for something sensible. I soon realised it was a mistake and returned to the dealer who told me the M6 was already sold. Then, thank goodness, I woke up.

You're right, there's little opportunity to use the performance of these cars but clearly I would miss mine.

Exclusivity to a degree for me. In Northern Ireland there doesn't seem to be very many E63's kicking about. There is only one I see on a regular basis, and one other I occasionally see.
Good few C63's knocking around, but not too many.
On the other hand, machines like the Golf R, which there is absolutely nothing wrong with, are a dime a dozen here.

I would echo all of the above posts, both those in favour and not. I did man maths in the pub to justify a frivolous AMG purchase and I now know I made the right decision haha! It's the total theatre of it all I guess.

I've not driven my CLS for a month now and I'm so damned excited about firing up the beast today and going out for a nice long drive.

It's the feel, the noise, the look of it, the brief moment on the throttle that has me grinning like a 5 year old who has been given the keys to the sweet shop...........

I may have only averaged a speed of 40mph over the last year but I can tell you that every time I get to 60 in the blink of an eye on a wave of supercharged roar, it's worth it. ;)

Can't really see myself without an AMG now to be honest........

I buy them because I like them. Controversial really I suppose but it's the only reason.

There's also an awful lot more to an AMG model than the engine, although these are rather impressive. The trim/interior levels alone are a deciding factor when I look at cars, and I've not usually been let down by the level that AMG finish them in. Also the handling capabilities and the body styling to match it. I'm currently on my fourth one, having moved brands a couple of times and, were I not determined I'm going to keep the one I've just bought, I'd certainly have another one as long as it had a V8/V12 in it.

Well when I decided to upgrade the R230 I looked at AMG models, the harsh ride, the extra costs in car tax and maintenance plus extra for insurance made me decide to keep to the "standard" 4.7 bi-turbo. As SL500AMG said earlier in the thread, it does 99% of an AMG for a lot less money.

Preaching to the already converted seems apposite here. Not sure what response the OP expected other than a degree of self affirmation when posting in an AMG Lounge?

Why buy a RR when a Dacia will get you there as well?

Different strokes for different folks.

My SL is the 2nd most impractical car I've ever owned (the SLK was even less practical) but I love it. When it goes, I have my eye on getting a E class AMG.

600hp in my current AMG, and all my cars for the last ~5 years have had 450-530hp. Granted, different cars with different weights and handling profiles but never thought that any of the power/setup was wasted.

I cannot drive the AMG like I am on track on UK roads but it never fails to put a smile on my face even on a short trip down to the shops. Sensibly and within the constraints of the law. On top of that - when I do want to take it on track, it comes into it's own.

I don't see the issue.

Some days I’d never use full throttle at all. On days that I did, in aggregate I doubt I had the pedal to the metal for more than around 10 to 15 seconds
15 seconds!! Even from standstill you'd have to be doing 140 by then. :p

A person who is happy in a 2 litre diesel obviously has different priorities and it's certainly a logical choice.

An AMG isn't a rationale choice. It's a want, not a need. In general, people are happy to spend more on something they want. The rewards you get from an AMG are the sort that give you a hit of adrenaline or a nice warm fuzzy feeling inside. You simply won't get that from a boring diesel. However, if you're not a petrolhead then clearly you don't crave such things, which is fine. Some of us do though and the ability to have a fun car that's also practical has a strong attraction.

I like mine for the theatre is offers. I open the door and fit myself into the sports seat and then fire up the engine and grin like a lunatic for a couple of seconds. I then enjoy the drive to wherever I am going and am able to do this in "C" mode nearly all the time using the rather impressive torque push to accelerate when needed without the urgency of a pedal smashed into the carpet and associated lunacy that immediately follows.

However, when the roads are dry and the weekend is upon me I do like to warm the car up and go out for some "shopping" - I use the term loosely as generally I don't know what the shopping is but do know I'll enjoy the drive to the location. This generally involves a 30 minute spirited drive (with widows cracked open when appropriate) a stop for a coffee that usually leads to a chat with one or more other like minded petrol heads and then a 30 minute drive home, usually to be asked "where have you been, and what for?", I just smile and point at the beast on the drive making gentle ticking noises :D

Effectively I use max power and braking about 2-3% of the time I drive the car but it is that small occasion that makes the other 97-98% of ownership so very worthwhile :thumb:

Even if you think a fast car is an unnecessary extravagance it still something worth doing once in your life. It then becomes a lasting memory which is almost as much fun as the real thing but much safer on the licence and wallet.

Stealing someone else's saying... there is no point in being the richest man in the graveyard, fortunately AMG are on hand to make sure that isn't the case!:D
