AMG performance *Controversial post warning*

When I bought my R230 SL500 I also looked at an SL55 that would have cost me double what I paid for the 500, I was tempted but I couldn't reconcile the AMG's extra cost given my intended style of driving the car. I now also have an Audi S5 (3.0 V6 supercharged) that gives me the same adrenalin kick as an AMG for less overall cost so getting a 6.2l car for similar performance but a lot more cost doesn't appeal at the moment I have driven a C63 (4.0 biturbo) at an AMG experience day didn't impress me at all.

Though a 4 ltr c63 is a far more impressive performance car than the sl500 . the SL500 still has impressive tech and luxury despite its age. it is a fab cruiser but it drives and handles like a boat in comparison

I wasnt comparing the C63 to my SL but was expecting something exceptional but was disappointed. I drive my SL moderately quickly, the ABC suspension is great.

It’s all about personal choice at the end of the day. We are all different and have different needs when it comes to driving. I suppose we are lucky in that we live in an age when there is so much choice. Some drivers just want to get from point A to point B and are not really bothered about the experience or what car they drive eg Mrs.B for one. I enjoy driving whether it be a performance car or a £500 convertible that my mate bought from eBay without viewing it first. Oops no on second thoughts I take that one back, it was a shed and an embarrassment to be in. The point I’m trying to make I can enjoy driving in any car because they are all different and have different characters. You have cruisers where you just potter about and then you have speed machines where you can engage in spirited driving if you so wish or you can mix and match the two depending how you feel. What ever mechanically propelled vehicle you drive the aim is to get pleasure from the experience unless of course you are my wife. :)

though I'm ashamed of the outcome, I went to a dealership specifically to buy a good example SL500 in April , other than the reliability issues , this model is in many ways the pinnacle of luxury cruising of its era and I always wanted one and still do. I left in a e46 m3 but an SL is still high up on my list. Maybe when I get rid of the M3 I'll come back for an SL .

Having done a few merc cars on the track, I found the c63 more playful and enjoyable than the AMG GT. The GT is stunning inside and out compared to the ugly C but cant entertain like the C IMO but is faster

I sold the E63 and am now in an ML500 because I can resist anything but temptation. The SLK is always there when I feel the need for a little temptation anyway...

Off topic but I'm going to send @E55BOF a PM once I can get my post count up...

Quite frankly I don’t really see the need for large capacity engines nowadays with all the talk about reducing emissions etc.
Not to mention we do have a max speed limit which is more than sufficient for our roads today with possible exception to some motorways.
I’ve had my V8’s in the past when tax and fuel was lower priced but now find my 2.1 D CLS more than adequate as our every day runner and the “modest” SL 350 for “fun days”
On top of that I think I give the government enough without shelling out exorbitant tax on the big engine cars which do little annual mileage.

Just means you're not a petrol head, I think we all agree there's no need but some of us want them.
Sorry, Steve don't agree you don't have to have a V8 AMG or any "big" engine for that matter to be a Petrol Head, i consider meself a massive petrol head, and have been all me life and anyone who knows me would certainly agree, probably bordering on the obsessive. :)

He who has the most HP wins.....
Sorry, Rory don't agree with that either, hey don't get me wrong V8 AMGs are Fantastic, but there not the be all and end all, some brilliant motors out there without a V8, imo of course.
:rolleyes::)

I disagree.

You're looking at this from a very narrow viewpoint.

I love cars, all cars not just a very small selection.

I reckon that you are not a petrolhead but simply a poseur.

Agreed with the above. Currently planning whether to replace the AMG with another big engine like a V12 (if I can afford one), or something else noisy like a yank V8, but otherwise considering a used Tesla Model S as our big comfy cruiser car for long journeys and getting something fun like a GT86 or maybe an Alfa 4C or something as our second car. I'd like a hot hatch but wifey says no. Point is there's no definitive car for car lovers.

You misunderstand what I meant, I never said you need to have a V8 to be a petrolhead. I like other engine types more than a V8, like the inline or flat six. My reply was in response to a post that says they can't see the point of big engines when they cost more and there are speed limits and 'slower' cars are adequate. Totally logical talk but a true petrolhead finds enjoyment from more interesting cars despite them being irrational on many levels.

I disagree.

See above for your comment about narrow.

I drive a fairly bland looking white estate car so that's hardly what I'd choose if I was a poseur...

My wallet is the only thing stopping me from being in an AMG.

You owners, continue to enjoy what makes you smile. Just having it parked on my driveway would make me smile.
Having it still parked there in the morning would generate an even bigger smile. :)
