This is a great piece of engineering. Very well made aluminium and very light.

I have tried to fit it on my C43 AMG but can not undo the crank bolt and have broken a few tools trying to get it off. I don't want to end up shearing the bolt off and having a big mess on my hands. Has anyone managed to change this part, my car has 110,000 miles and is 9 yrs old. I weight 15 stone and that was not enough to get it off. I am very dissapointed that I have not been able to install.

Due to this I will take any sugestions or sell for new parts £250 including a new MB crank bolt and crank oil seal.

Please contact Paul on 07944889450

Hmmm.

1) Surely this should be in classifieds...
2) ...except you can't because this is your first post. An interesting attempt to circumvent forum rules, but I sense an impending mod intervention

Taking your post at face value...!

I had my local independent replace my pulley with the new one that I supplied. He fitted it for AU$80 plus AU$36 for a new stretch bolt. Now that's only a few quid!

Appologies, I really don't want to sell I just want to get it fitted on and then give feed back on how the change performs.

have we made a classic mistake and the threads on the bolt are oppossite threads I will check on my new bolt.

Should I think about removing the radiators and getting an air gun on it?

Yes, it is in an area where you can do some real damage to your radiator. You can remove the radiator or alternatively, protect it with some temporary guard (cardboard, plywood etc).

The easy way out is to make a few calls to your local MB mechanic shops and get a few quotes!

I did unfortunately 3 hours labour + vat put me off , this is a 1 hr job max and know one likes being ripped off.

But I suppose its better that if the bolt tears off the engine it does it in the main dealer workshop.

It is very tight that bolt.

What improvements does it make? I am very curious.

My independent mechanic (ex-Mercedes) said it was a 1.5 or 2 hour job at MB for the C36. But he said he could do it in 45 minutes and would only charge me for the actual time involved (which he did!).

Will they preserve the balancing Mercedes will have done to the crank?

Good question, but like I siad this is a quality bit of engineer, it also dampens engine vibration from the crank know as the "harmonic dampener" as it has a thick rubber ring in the pulley.

The orginal pulley had a recal and have been know to shatter due to the vibration, I still have the original pulley on my car as the crank bolt design is the old one and the new one I have purchase is different.

THis sounds silly but......
........but can anyone recomend a workshop with a 6ft breaker bar in London they know of?

I had the crank pulley replaced on my C32

at first I considered having a go myself,
but after a few weeks of not finding the time or enough courage to have a go I decided to ask the independent I use to change it for me while my car was having a few other jobs done.

they quoted me just over a hour labour up front so I was happy to let them take job :)

they use a special tool to hold the pulley while the bolt is removed which I'm sure must make the job a lot easier, and I had the peace of mind of knowing it would be done correctly which is well worth it IMO and the labour cost was a lot less than I paid for the pulley

HTH

IMHO - I wouldn't call an AMS pulley an 'upgrade' :-(

It's been discussed on other MB forums and found to be inherently dangerous due to in adequate mass to dampen torsional resonance within the crankshaft plus it adds at best 0.4HP and does practically nothing to improve the mpg.

Try googling AMS Omeyhomey and fraud for the full scoop on this well engineered piece of snake oil......

This is a very old thread!

A lot of water has passed under the bridge since then and a lot more research and information on harmonic balancers has reached the ears of the unwashed masses (including me).

I now fully agree with mb_amg's comment!
