Annoyed by overtaking

Whilst on the way home from work this evening I was following a van doing a good few miles per hour less than the NSL so, with the road being straight and the nearest car in the opposite lane about a quarter of a mile down the road I did a quick, safe overtake.
Having pulled in and carried on my merry way, the woman driving the car coming the other way decided to flash me and give me a very unfriendly hand gesture as we passed.
This wasn't a close call; no one had to brake or squeeze past; it was a normal overtake.
This isn't the first time his has happened. It normally happens when I'm on my motorbike.
Is it just me or do others experience this bizarre behaviour?

I wish a woman would flash at me and give a hand gesture.

It's notorious in Cornwall, they're morons down here. Terrible drivers the majority.

They think if anyone over takes it's their god given right to be an ass hole.

Eugh don't get me started haha

Good to know it happens to others. I was getting a bit paranoid...

When driving my HGV on the M25 I was passing an slip lane on my left and I was in the inside lane doing 56mph (limited). There was a car coming down the slip road and on checking my offside mirror I could not change into lane 2 (as I normally do out of courtesy) because there was a vehicle coming up the outside. The woman coming onto the motorway drew level with me and kept staring at me, I had two choices - slow down or just continue so I simply continued at my steady speed. As the slip lane was rapidly coming to an end the woman slowed down and went behind me. She then accelerated past me on the outside giving me the old two finger salute as she sped passed. Can you believe that?! :dk: The point being - she had the power (and time) to pass me while she was on the slip lane but chose to sit and give me daggers!

I've had some looney try and blind me with their high beam for daring to overtake a car doing 40 on a NSL road - with 500 yards to spare. Morons everywhere.

Can't comment as I am not a member of the overtakers brigade - I am usually at the receiving end of the manoeuvre.

I always accommodate though - whether to my right or straight ahead - not due to any misplaced courtesy, but thanks to my overactive self-preservation gland....

I find in this day and age, everyone tail-gates, so on A roads there is no space between vehicles and the art of overtaking has been largely lost. Therefore when inexperienced drivers see someone overtake, they consider it to be something dangerous.

That's my theory anyway :dk:

In fact... In extreme cases where overtaking isn't possible I would pull over and let the car trailing me (with a three micron gap) pass. I find it quite intimidating when people try to get intimate with me in this way.

If I'm in no hurry then I always leave a larger gap between myself and the car in front in order that anyone who does want to overtake can do so safely and without having to stand on their brakes after the manoeuvre.
I suppose it's naive of me to think that others would do the same. It's very often the opposite - people with no intention of overtaking who will do all they can to make sure you can't, including moving to the white line or worst of all speeding up to match your speed.

What bugs me, is imbecilic overtaking of cyclists, both when I'm a cyclist, and when I'm driving. Many drivers seem to assume that if there's a gap they can squeeze through, then they should, without adjusting their speed. This seems to apply regardless of whether they are approaching a bend, crest of a hill etc. The thinking seems to be 'I'm not going to slow down to 15 miles per hour and wait behind a stupid cyclist'.

Happened to a friend of mine out on his bike locally, some muppet nipped past him going up a hill, crashed head on into an oncoming vehicle, fortunately, I say fortunately because there was minimal injury, if she'd swerved back, she probably would have killed my mate.

Jeremy Vine was talking about overtaking on his Radio 2 show and asked, with mild outrage, 'do people still do that?'
Maybe Hawkwind's right, it's a dying art.
One thing's for sure, when I'm in the Auris I don't even attempt it. Some people actually speed up when you try overtaking. Gits!

Yes...you said.

Drove a long road in Kiwi Land yesterday. Did meet one other car but it was going in the opposite direction so no chance of an overtake. Maybe tomorrow:dk:
