Hi Folks,

Im getting some nightmare quotes for my 17 year old son at the moment to be a second driver on a Toyota Yaris whilst he learn on a provisional licence.

Has anyone found a company that is reasonable, because so far the quotes I am getting are soo huge that I can't believe my eyes :eek:

Its no wonder most of these youngsters out there take the easy route of driving without insurance as god only knows how they are supposed to afford £1600 and above just for TPFT insurance on a 998cc vehicle (and thats with me as the main driver !!!!):crazy:

Unfortunately that's probably not a bad price comparitively for a 17 year old male driver on a provisional license. It's always been expensive - when I was 17/18 I think I used to pay circa £1k - about 10 years ago.

Hi Will,

Unfortunately it will be me thats paying the premium as he is still a student and it will be my own policies that will be at risk if there is a prang :crazy::crazy:. I hate to think of what the premium would be if he was listed as the main driver.

I found one company that would do it for £700 ( Thats myself as main driver and my son as second driver) but when he passes his test they add another £1000 onto the premium .

My 2 daughters are learning on wife's Rav4. £1080. They are however 21 and 19. Boys may be more expensive, because even last year when my daughter was 18 it cost £1200.

Even so, I'm guessing whatever quote you find will be into four figures :( I guess (statistically) 17 year old learner males are just a very high risk. Living in London doesn't help things - crowded roads, more crime etc.

Occasionally, some of the new small cars come with insurance thrown in. I knew someone who worked for Vauxhall at the time offering a 'Corsa SXI' for something like £8k with two years F/C insurance thrown in, they'd cover young/new drivers too. Wasn't a bad deal considering the insurance would've been worth a few £k but I didn't want to drive a Corsa

I don't want to make things worse but the premium will INCREASE quite substantially when he passes his test - the rationale is he will a) drive more often and b) not be surpervised any more!

When my eldest turned 18 she was offered a 6 year old Polo by her aunt. Free. To learn on. But insurance killed that off. £3000!!!

Direct Line for us.
Wife main driver, me named & number 1 son named.
Third party fire & theft on a Citroen C2 1.1 litre about £600 first year when learning, Reduced to £422 this year. I could have got fully comp for the same money with More Than but I need to add number 2 son as he is starting to learn in the next couple of weeks (about half way through insurance year) and More Than were no good for learner driver 18 months ago.

When my daughter was learning, she got a moped licence at 16, and insured one in her name. When she started cars at 17 she had a years no claim...about £700 4 years ago.

Live in a cheap insurance area, get a years no-claim and be female, it seems. Now at 21 she has 5 years no claims and a relatively modest premium for a Corsa.

My son, on the other hand drove like a lunatic between 17 and 20, has points, a ban and two minor claims. £250 a month, the joys of testosterone. :wallbash:

I added a learner driver (Mrs Ringway) to my 3.0V6 Omega policy with MORE THAN.

The cost was zero!

IT IS an age thing I'm afraid.

It's a few years ago for us now, but we (and lots of other families at the time) used CIS on an any driver policy. They whack the excess up for young drivers, but the premium wasn't bad.

Check out Adrian Flux. apparently they specialise in Young Drivers and sports cars. Might be what you're looking for. My insurance for my Mk4 Golf was 1200 third party *cries*

Otherwise Kwik Fit are normally pretty good!

Quinn direct were sensible(ish) when provisional about £800 in sons own name on a 1.4 polo, when he was 17.

When he passed his test it went up a lot (like £1000), but he did get a 20% discount as he already had the policy.

As above ,boys = expensive cubed

Daughter, as learner on wifes polo 1.9 tdi extra 700

post test, a claim for which she recd 4 points and 60 fine + costs, renewal 2200!!

so r reg 1.9 non turbo diesel purchased, 1200 with Admiral ,tpft

insurance cost 2x car purchase ! Interestingly the quotes were much cheaper when adding a parent as a SECOND driver, but again went up adding a second parent.

A warning. insuring in your name for son to be main driver is called fronting, & in the event of anysort of incident your son would be deemed uninsured, plus will be given enough points to be banned. I know anumber of new drivers this has happened to.

When we added my Son at 17 it was £800 TPO with Tesco on a '95 1.6 Astra (wife's). I had checked before my previous renewal and deliberately switch to them because they seemed the cheapest.

He's 21 next month and we are now paying £400 TPO on the same car (still with his as named driver - he's at Uni most of the time anyway). Need to add my daughter in January as she turns 17 then.

Try quotes for him with you as named driver, might no be much difference, Swift cover will cover under 21 only as a named driver but were well priced when Jay was learning in my forfour. Tesco are worth a try too as are Swintons.

Ah, this old chestnut:). Try Liverpool Victoria (also known as LV). They are consistently cheaper than other companies we have had quotes from. Fully comp for our A170 CDI for wife and myself works out around £250 per year on a £250 excess. When we put our daughter on it with a provisional licence it went up by just over £450 to around £700 per year on the same excess for us, but £500 excess for daughter. We have 5+ years no claims bonus (unprotected) with a greater london postcode.

If you take out the insurance online via Quidco - The web's cashback cooperative you might get a cash back of £20 (used to be £70, then £45 and now £20). We have been renewing annually via Quidco and have been getting a cash back for the last 3 years.

Good luck.
