Read all the threads relating to coolant loss, but don't see my problem covered.
I have a '98 W210 E280 and the last couple of days I have noticed a small pool of water under the offside side front of the car. I checked the level of coolant this evening and had to replace around 0.5 litre.
The leak doesn't appear to be coming from the water pump, but with a trip tomorrow at 5am to Heathrow, I'm a bit worried.

I removed the oil filler cap and checked the dipstick and there is no mayo, so hopefully that is ruling out head gasket problems. No white smoke from the exhaust and the temp gauge remains constant at around 80c.

When I have more time, I'll remove the undertray and try to pinpoint exactly where the leak is coming from, but if it is just from the overflow pipe from the header tank, what could be causing that?
Thanks for any replies.

are you sure its not just A/C water?

Well the coolant level in the tank had dropped and needed around 0.5 litre to refill?
The A/C has recently been regassed but only just noticed this leak. I think the removal of the undertray will show things more clearly.

the A/C will secrete condensation when parked up after being used..

Are you sure the coolant level hasnt been creeping down over time?

It's a puddle of condensation this evening!
I will admit not checking the coolant in a long time. It's one thing that has never needed topping up since ownership. Then again, we have had some very warm weather recently.

Thanks for your replies Jay.

I had rather similar symptoms earlier this year. Turned out to be the head gasket.

Did the 190 mile round trip to Heathrow this morning, and not a drop of coolant lost:dk:. I didn't hang around on the M3 either, and the temp gauge was steady at 80c.

Will just keep an eye on it and look under that engine undertray.

Just checked again with the engine running.
It's the water pump:doh:
The pump and fan blade are running badly out of true and the bearings are making a noise. Looks like a new pump:(

Any ideas on the cost of a new pump and fitting from an indy?

New pump from ECP £65. Booked in at MBS Southampton for Mon am:bannana:

Be careful with the cheapo pumps. They can last five minuites.
