Another expensive Day

This mercedes ownership thing is turning out to be rather costly. I put the merc in today to get new rear brake pads to get a phone call from the garage to say that the offside rear caliper pins had broken off and the near side was hanging by a thread. So the car needed new calipers +discs+pads+rear shoes both sides total bill £366. Just what I needed 2 weeks before our caravan holiday. The only consolation is that the padal is lucky to travel one click and it holds the car now instantly with no movement of the wheels at all. Is it just me, but has anyone noticed that mercedes parts are either really cheap or ludicrously expensive . there's no middle ground.

£286 sounds very reasonable for new calipers, discs and pads. It could have easily been double that. Enjoy your holiday.

Yeah, think yourself lucky.... Genuine Honda Motorcycle disks are over £250 each and calipers work out at nearly a grand a pair!

However, I'm struggling to figure out how caliper pins can break off and indeed how that could damage the caliper. The only time I have seen damaged caliper pins is when someone mullers them trying to get them out

That does sound not too bad Pepper - was it a Mercedes Stealership that did the work or an independent garage?

I would say that was a good price from a local garage yet alone a MB dealer. Rear calipers must be £50-£80 each alone.

Fifteen years of use took it's toll .The discs were scored, the nearside one had a ring of rust about an inch wide all the way round its circumferance where the pad bid not make contact, when they where removed it all fell to pieces. They look lovely and shiney now It was just my local garage that I always go to not an Mb dealer or a specailists either. John Taylor Cars EastKilbride 01355 231999.
