Just heard this on the evening news, actually shocked, it clearly happened as suggested.

Interesting to see how harsh the penalty for this is.

Renault exit stage left?

I see the entire team's position as untennable, they should take no further part in the season and if that does happen would the manufacturer decide that was a good time to call it a day? Maybe just supply engines....

Just heared it also, if true and it would seem so just makes F1 even more of a joke than its been in the past.

Ferrari win, ooh no Renault win, oh no McClaren win....

Just scrap the whole thing and concentrate on touring car racing :)

F1 is being exposed to be the same as any other sponser supported 'sport'. One shouldn't be suprised, where big money is involved cheats will play....

So do you think they're all a bit fed up that Brawn didn't read the script and showed them all up?

Reckon that's the only way to go for Renault as I see it, they need to distance themselves from this as soon as possible, and to withdraw would at least indicate the do not condone what has happened and do not wish to be associatedwith such practices. :(

Engine supplier seems to make sense.

I feel for the 700 or so people who work for Renault F1 if that happens, as theyre all being made to pay for the decisions being made by Mr Briatore and Pat Symonds.

it's a little extreme in the case of asking Nelson Piquet to crash don't you think? I mean this has really rasied the bar to the level of **** Dastardly in Whacky Races  Where will it end??:(

Ross Brawn, a master inovator and rule manipulator :) If only there were more like him!

I think Renault have been punished enough by the actions of the few. I think the loss of another team would weaken the sport further. The guilty party have gone, let Renault continue to race.

I've seen speculations considering this the same as the McLaren case where Ron Dennis leaving the stage solved the issue. Perhaps still not sufficient for the Renault case.

I'm by no means a Renault fan but I would hope the team can continue (could be that Alonso too gets punished, but perhaps he was leaving Renault anyway).

On the other hand, now it looks like it isn't the Brawn team alone, even Force India can beat the big teams. But is it good for the F1 if the big names stop scoring points?

Trouble is that the punishment bar has been set very high - as with the McLaren case. For McLaren there wasn't even any hard evidence that they had used the Ferrari intelligence, only that they had been in possession of it (though clearly one can draw ones own conclusions). Other than the potential to 'level' the vehicles, the McLaren crime didn't directly affect the outcome of races. In my book the Renault case is far more serious, being potentially life threatening as well as a blatant cheat in the course of a race. Can't see atm how they should get away with less than being thrown out.

ever read the book the 'piranaha club' ? Tells you about politics in F1....

Renault will end up paying a huge fine, circ $50 to 100m, and loose all points from this year.

Piquet in my opinion shows something - how much power did briatore have over him to ask him to effectively risk his own life and crash on purpose ?!

new.

Nothing that new.

Senna took out Prost at the first corner of Suzuka in 1989.

Schumacher took out Hill in 1994.

And tried the same trick on Villeneuve in 1997.

So Piquet Jnr is in with some esteemed company - and didn't actually crash deliberately into another driver either - just with a wall.

The difference here is that it was premeditated by a team to benefit another driver. That means not only was it cheating by a driver - but involved conspiracy with several members within the team to deal with the strategy gain.
