When I receive an email with an attachment, most of the time I can open the attachment easilly. However, if I receive an email with a word attachment I get a file conversion box open, and no matter what conversion I use, I cannot read the word document. I have word 2007 and the file I am trying to read is an .xls. Our other computer does not have a problem, what settings do I need to get into to open the documents?

Thanks, I realise its an Excell document, but hotmail keeps trying to open it in word and it seems automatic and gives me no choice with what program I open it with. Most other attachments whether powerpoint, excell or word opens automatically with the correct program but for some reason my PC has started playing up.

Try this:
Right click on the document and select "SAVE TARGET AS" (I'm assuming internet explorer here). Save it to your desktop (or somewhere easy to remember).

Next, find the document on your computer, right click on it again and select "Open With" then "Choose Default Program" (or something to those lines depending on the flavour of windows you use).

Find excel, and then make sure the "Always open with" box is ticked before clicking on OK/OPEN.

Thanks, that is what I had to do, but I connot understand why I now have to save the document. Anyway, its been open and read, thanks again.

If you tick the "always open with" box, you should need to do it only the first time :)

All subsequent "openings" will look at that entry and it should always open xls files with excel :)
