Yes, another E230 CDi has joined the club. 2001 Avantgaurde
Going into limp mode after 2 mins or so of either driving or idling - can be reset by flicking the ignition off and on again whilst on the trot.
Clunky gear change when not limping and a "Red Arrow" style smoke trail in a stunning black colour every now and again - usually around a gear change.

Possible causes......

MAF sensor / MAS
EGR
Inlet valve
The missus (mysteriously broke when she borrowed it)

Is there anything I could check before it dissappeares into the dealer on Wednesday?

Forget the stealer. Tell us where you live, someone will point you in the direction of an independant - half the price.

Sure - Im in Wokingham. Does anyone know who may be best to go to with a Star diag system?

Many thanks!

Could be the MAF or EGR or injectors in that order.

Star diag is coming up with Port inlet shutoff valve fault.
Should I replace this first?
:bannana:

I have just thought about this some more and I am fairly (90%) certain that this is causing the fault as I can remember a squeaking noise on full throttle which must be the air rushing past the closed air valves in the intake manifold.
Im going to replace them tomorrow as the parts are special delivery and let you know how I get on.

Hehe - ive just realised my typo....

That'll be an E320 then.....

The inlet port valve motor was ceased - well at least that is what the dealer told me. They also advised that the mounting pointls at the other ed of the linkage was broken and could comeoff at anytime. Has anyone had a scimilar thing happen?
They also said that the cat was blocked and was restricting the engine. This was first evident as the osf headlmp is slightly grubbier from the soot escaping due to the build up of pressure before the cat. Now - this sounds like pap to me - but is this something to go along with??

The linkages do sieze and break and the cats do block.

Recently got over these problems. Exactly the same situation I had with my car. To solve the choked CAT problem once and for all, I had both, the Pre-CAT located just aft of the Turbo removed and the CAT emptied out. The car now, as I mentioned in my post titled Choked Exhaust on a E220 CDI dated 15-07-2006, runs great with loads of power. It also operates cooler and has a clearer albeit louder throat.

Regards,

Asif.

Interesting you mention it runs cooler. This is exactly why chipping is bad for a diesel unless a EGT gauge is fitted.

AAAAAAAAAARRRRRGH!

SO I picked the car up from the dealers yesterday afternoon and drove it away. It was going like stink!! Running really well with plenty of torque and power. It was great to not put my foot down and see a trail of black smoke.
So imagine how i felt when after about 2 miles, i notice that it is starting to smoke again..... and when I put my foot down - wel down on power and torque.

Yup - STRAIGHT back in to limp mode again.

I spoke to the dealer this morning and gave a right ear-full to the service manager who said he would 'look into' the situation.

I think all they did was to hook the port inlet valve assembly linkage up again which cured the problem (very temporarily). I do NOT think they fitted a new port valve motor at all.

It is now being picked back up from work for them to get thier grubby little hands on.

Why is EVERY experience I've had with MB ultimately a bad one.

GREENOAKS of ASCOT are PANTS.

Well, you could try John's (glojo) dealership. From what I hear, they will pamper you well as well as nurse your pride and joy back to health, besides its a good excuse to spend the weekend on the coast:-)

What is the best way to get to the inlet valve linkage.
I am going to have a look at the state of it and decide weither to go for a new manifold or not.

Thanks guys!
