Any idea what this is and where it goes?

I found a loose bit of plastic in the back of my 211 E class estate and would like to put it back where it belongs - alas, I have no clue other than the part number moulded into it - 211 619 17 38

A quick Google throws up the part in one of two places - Front floor assembly or rear floor assembly. The description of the part is very usefully "Cover, Battery"

I've had a quick look and can't see anywhere it would potentially fit, except as a cover for the battery strap clip.

Does anyone know where it belongs and how to fit it? Or should I adopt the Lotus approach and leave it off to "add lightness"

I think I've attached some photos, if they don't show up I'll try something else.

Yup, battery cover - I did use Google to get that far. Not obvious how it fits on though - any useful diagrams or photos that anyone can post up? The ones on that south Atlanta merc spares site are exploded diagrams with no assembly context.

No, your negative terminal is missing a black version of what covers the positive terminal.

But have a close look at the plastic on the neg terminal...looks like you may have the one for the pos terminal.

It's nothing like the cover on the neg terminal, and it doesn't look like it'll fit over the pos terminal with that red cover on.....I've already taken it off to have a look.

We have a winner. It has a little diagonal channel on the inside face that the battery drain/vent tube sits in - so the strap doesn't put any pressure on it.
