Hi guys

I appear to be buying a 1969 Pagoda but need some pointers ... I say "appear" as i have said yes subject to a 24 hours to consider. Is there anyone on the forum that knows a little about these cars, especially the body/structural elements and happy to share their pearls of wisdom and so prevent me buying a pup......

I have always wanted one of these and values appear to be racing away.

Cheers

Marc

hi mate if you go and buy this months mercedes enthusiast it comes with another mag for free classic mercedes i think and it has a buyers guide on the pagoda, also there is a pagoda specialist in the uk maybe a google search will come up trumps.
this popped up on ebay yesterday
Mercedes Benz 280SL pagoda 1968 | eBay
its dirt cheap for a pagoda??

I know nothing about the Pagodas, other than that they're beautiful cars. A 280SL is definitely in my dream garage.

I would however paraphrase the old saying by mentioning "buy in haste, repent at leisure". I gather they do have their issues (mostly relating to tin worm) and can cost more to repair than they are worth in the end if you buy a duffer..

Cheers,

Gaz

For what it's worth I think this one screams scam and would welcome others thoughts as did seem to be half price and so too good to be true. I have found pictures of the same car on gum tree style ads with incomplete phone number.

The car I am buying is a little further afield ;), and so as usual I am buying without seeing it... No lectures please just a note of what to watch for.....

Thanks

Marc

I know of one that cost fifty large yet still had problems; the part costs are astronomical, so what might seem like a cheap job can run into thousands.

I'll found out a bit more tomorrow on it.

That's a scam^^
it has to be mate, who in there right mind would let a pagoda go for that when all they have to do is one google search to see there value!!

I have one (1969 280) and have become pretty familiar... If you want to talk just call me at work. Home - Mercland... If you have a link for the car then I could have a look.

No better place on earth for knowledge on the model: Welcome - Mercedes Benz 230SL, 250SL, 280SL Pagoda Group - see their forum.

If the car is for sale anywhere it may be discussed on there.

You absolutely MUST have a specialist look at a pagoda before you buy it. Howard has pointed you in the right direction. You will very likely come unstuck even if you buy from a "reputable" dealer as they're mostly "polishing a turd" specialists rather than "ENGINEERING" specialists.

Off topic I know, but I spotted this one lurking in a shed yesterday looking like it needed a new home......

Can you recommend anyone, Colin?

You really need to know the finer points of the W113 to assure that you're buying a vehicle that is worth what you pay for it..

Something as simple as looking for the notch in the sheetmetal located on the upper inner side of the headlight bezel indicates if correct body work or no body work has been done on the front wings..

The firewall hood insulator should be the waffle textured original...
Decals must be correct from the engine bay to the trunk...

Not necessary that the finer points exist, but very necessary if you a paying a top price !!

They are great cars, true roadsters and very nimble handling..

Research well, don't rush, deal with specialists...

A few pics of my 1971 280SL...

Get used to the reversed shift pattern of the auto trans !!!!

Tons of info to be found using Google -

Roger Edwards. Used to be in Wembley, I think now Amersham or Aylesbury or somewhere over that way.. I can't find a website, google him.

Not sure what cemetary you'll find Edwards in as he died in 2006 :(

Edwards partner was Cedric Selzer and Paul Sumner..

Paul Sumner - United Kingdom | LinkedIn

I posted a link to a book written by Chris Bass which was influenced by Edwards :thumb:
