Quick question....if I export a car to South Africa are there any nasty import duty's payable once it hits SA????.....if so are the duty rates age related and if so what are the duty rates and cut off points.

Also are there different rates for private imports and for business imports?

Many thanks

Yes, it costs an absolute fortune!! we had a lad working for us last year from South Africa, and when he went home he wanted to take his VW Golf V5 with him. He`d paid £5500 for the car and the import taxes etc came to £4200  Can`t remember exactly how that broke down, but I know he didn`t bother in the end!!

I know its a long shot but if the car is in 'bits' its not classed the same? as its parts.... Not sure how many 'bits' it would have to be in to class as parts.

I was born in SA and almost brought a Khaman Ghia back on one of our last trips. It was awesome.

That was a trick he was looking into, but he decided against it in the end

Not sure but I believe they look at the FULL value of the car when new, and then its a percentage of that price!.. Not sure though...

Ps. I'm not south african!.. I just know too much!!.. :)
