We have a tag for France, and I'd like one for Italy too in readiness for our 2016 European Road Trip.

I had been under the impression that it wasn't possible without an Italian bank account and home address, however TollTickets.com appear to be able to act as a middleman, charging a rental for the tag and making a margin on the tolls.

Anyone used Telepass through TollTickets.com, or used a similar tag sourced by other means?

Toll in Italy with Telepass & VIAcard

I remember a few years back , my first time on the autostrada , straying into the Telepass lane , not realising what it was . I didn't have a Telepass thingy and rolled down the window to hear this fast talking Italian on the intercom . All I could do was say 'no comprendi' and give a big shrug , by this time there were cars behind blowing their horns , so they raised the barrier and let me go .

I expected to have to pay at the exit , but no , and I heard nothing further . I've been back since and not been arrested .

I have a Telepass and it works really well. However I have an Italian bank account that it links to. The Viacard thingy is used quite a lot in Italy so it all seems above board. One additional advantage to Telepass is that it now works for car parks in most major cities and airports and also the ferry to Sicily.
Not surprisingly the service charges with Tollticket are several times what Telepass actually charge.

That's really helpful, thank you. Do you know if you can get an Italian bank account with a UK address?

You can but its not that easy. You will still need an Italian tax code (codice fiscale). The Italian banks all charge fees especially for foreigners so you wont end up saving anything unless you need an account for other reasons.
As far as I can tell from the telepass website it cannot be linked to a credit card (Italian or foreign) only a bank account or Viacard. The Viacard is only available if you have a bank account! Catch 22.
Tollticket are presumably providing that bank account and that is what you are paying them for.

Getting close to our next trip to italy, so I've just ordered a Telepass from Tolltickets.com

I was surprised that you can registered a credit card or even Paypal to pay toll charges :thumb:

I've just ordered a Telepass for use on our next trip to Italy. We already have a Sanef Télépéage for use in France.

Any idea whether there be any problems having both devices in the car at the same time?

Both Toll Tickets and Sanef replied to my emails super quickly to confirm that the devices won't interfere with each other, but suggested keeping a 100mm gap.

I don't really mind sitting at the pay booths.
Helps add some time on between tolls in case of "ahem" transgressions/cruise control faults....

No problem at all. I have both on the screen behind the mirror on the 124. Just done the run back to Italy and all went well. No queues anywhere and the 124 ran perfectly all the way. Not bad for a 20 year old car. Covered 1000miles in 24 hours. Didn't use any oil - just lots of unleaded

On mine they are positioned in close proximity - perhaps 5mm between them. Had them like that for few years now with no problems.

I've used toll tickets many times. Buy all my vignettes from them and use them for sanef tolls. I've just ordered an emission sticker too. They've always been very efficient and reliable.

Just out of interest, what is the point in getting any toll passes if you are not driving there regularly. I drive to italy every year to various points and i am never in a long que. The longest it takes is 15 mins and its a good time to let the car cool down and eat a sandwich!!

Pay by credit card is quick and easy!

What's the emission sticker? For Italy?

Paying by credit card is indeed quick and easy, but not as quick or as easy as using a tag!

We'll be driving around a lot, and aiming for the "fast lane" is quicker, simpler, and it means I can pass through without troubling Mrs D. That's especially useful when travelling late, which we often do.

There's a small cost premium, but in the grand scheme of things it's tiny compared to the cost of the tolls, never mind the total cost of a driving holiday covering such long distances.

The latest news is that Telepass have announced Telepass EU. One device and account that works in France, Italy, Spain and Portugal. As yet no firm details on when its available or if its a different device.

Makes you wonder why there isn't one already.

It seems Austria use number plate recognition instead. I must find out more.
