Are modern family cars bigger?

Modern families are much bigger too!

Give me modern everyday. Imagine a RTA In that???
A 50kg 46 year old woman is far better protected in a two tonne Land Rover Disco if something gets in her way on the School run.

But is so much weight and bulk really necessary?

She may be, but the children in the playground are not if she presses the wrong pedal, as we've seen this week with tragic results.

No it isn't necessary and the real question is when does this trend stop ?

Cars have become progressively heavier and more powerful every year. Without some intervention the 50Kg school mum will be driving something heavier and faster. Make it 2.5 tonnes already if it's an EV, then it's not hard to see 3 tonnes in the near future. Lets make it 4 tonnes. Ridiculous you say, but if ridiculous hasn't stopped the increase in weight and power so far, why would it in the future. I have no faith that common sense will prevent the average size and weight of cars from continuing to increase. Environmental madness regardless of the the source of motive power.

The best thing about the photo of the Austin 7 is that it fits comfortably in the parking space with room to open the doors. And imagine something of similar size parked in your garage with acres of space around it.

Not safe though is it, but then neither is my motorcycle.

See for yourself.
I am well aware you are more experienced than me at this D' , but wouldn't a more appropriate image be something like this ?

The thing is, when the Austin 7 was current, most other cars were similar, so any collision would likely be at much lower speed with less kinetic energy involved. It’s only when you place the Austin 7 in the current environment its safety is woefully inadequate.

If only cars were more like sweets, eh.?

Where I live probably accentuates the view but some of the latest ‘family’ vehicles are genuinely enormous. With the summer season proper beginning, watching people squeeze into parking spaces has become a wonderfully entertaining pastime. Personal favourite for ‘you’ve got no chance of getting in there mate’ is the Kia EV6. 😳🤭🤣

A modern E Class Mercedes is almost the same size as an 80's S Class
A modern American family car is much smaller than an American family car from the 60's or 70's

True, but the best selling car/truck in the US is the Ford F150, by a long margin.

Interestingly, the first BMW car, the Dixi, was based on the Austin 7.

Cue the Prius....
