Are modern family cars bigger?

True, but the best selling car/truck in the US is the Ford F150, by a long margin.

You actually mean the F Series line of trucks and not just the F150. It includes the F250 - F550 which are heavy duty trucks. Between them all, they replace a lot of vehicle, but that said, I guarantee that 80% of people who own one also have a second or third vehicle.

Cars are getting bigger , it's about time local councils/developers took note and made parking spaces bigger. There are moves afoot to pass legislation to force them to make parking spaces bigger , but at the moment they are 'guidelines' . The current sizing guidelines have been in place for many decades .

In 1965 the average width of the top 5 selling cars was 1.5 meters !!

In 2020 it grew to 1.8 meters (most of that probably door mirrors I suspect) Not massive growth but going up all the same , length wise the average went up from 3.9 M to 4.3 metres.

I note my local Sainsurys has painted 'islands' between each space to help the 'hard of parking' and I think it's a welcome development but my guess is when a developer is applying for permission to build something when the question of how much parking is available it is probably in their best interest to squeeze as many spaces in the application as possible.

There is a relatively new medical centre near me that has parking spaces so small people have to often drop their passenger off before parking and squeezing themselves out of the drivers door resting against the car next door.

Whoever measured for the white lines must drive an Austin A7 :p

When we were looking at houses in 2006 I wanted a garage for the SL (hardly a huge car), and it was amazing how many were too narrow for it to fit through the doorway and/or then be able to get out of the car. We ended up buying a house with a double - I needed the other side just to be able to open the car door! The house we're in now also has a double but more recently built ... we didn't realise till after we'd moved in that it's a *lot* bigger (wider, longer and taller) and takes the R129 and S205 with loads of room to spare. The previous owners apparently sized it to fit their Land Rover.

It's rare for a British lass to be so slight.
South West London women. It’s a thing.

We don’t feed them

My wife has a 7 seat Hyundai Santa Fe. Recently whilst is the US we hired a 7 seat Santa Fe.
( coincidentally the same colour) ,….but it was definitely bigger than our U.K. spec.

A good indication of how tall todays young teenagers are is to stand them next to the first moped they would have been allowed to ride . My mate has a large collection of bikes from the 60's 70's and his (immaculate) Yamaha FS1E (Fizzy) is absolutely tiny !! as are other 'first bikes' of that era.

There's a mini that often gets parked next to me in the far corner of my local supermarket. I only know it's a mini because I looked at the badge to see what it was. It dwarfs my C-class!

Surely most of the reasons for the increasing sizes of cars these cars are down to what’s installed in them.
Multi-media
Split level air con
Gazillions of airbags
Crumple zones
The list probably goes on.
