After viewing a 2000 model CLK yesterday that was rustier than my 1997 C Class, it got me wondering if there are some colours that are more prone to rust than others. I don't know if there is any substance to my theory, but I was wondering if those of you who see a lot of Mercs (e.g the Dealers and mechanics among you) would be able to suggest if there are any colours that are less prone to rust than others.

Any thoughts?

I'll guess that black would rust less than white, because surely it would heat up more in the sun, thus drying quicker if it's wet?

Just a guess, not scientific! :o

Certainly is the case with other marques, 2 wheeled and 4, for example the blue or yellow SD1's didn't rust much compared to the other colours.

All to do with how the pigments affect the properties of the paint.

Even though the overall paint coat is thinner I think the solid colours last better than metallics.

I've always suspected silver to be worse than the rest but I think thats due to, ahem, rarity :)

Had two in two tone Travertine Beige - mainly beige but with rust coloured highlights

The car I saw which got me wondering was Dark blue, I don't know what the correct colour name was for it though.

On W210s it appears to be 744 Brilliant Sliver, and the dark blue colour (not Azurite) from what I see on the roads which are the worst effected.

I saw a Silver 2000 model W208 yesterday that was very clean apart from one small scab on a back wheel arch. I'm going to try to look at another silver one tomorrow that is being advertised by a mercedes main dealer so I'm hoping that means it should be relativley rust free.

I just hope IBW will allow it in his garage if I buy it!! :D

Its ok Gaz, I saw a dull chrome W202 in there at the beginning of January

Funnily enough, my W202 in 189 Emerald Green rusts like a bugger as much as I try and stop it :(
