Somebody recently posted a link to a repair manual for an auto box. I've since done various searches and can't find it again. I remember it listed all the symptoms and likely causes.

If anybody can find the message I would be eternally (well that's probably going a bit far so lets just say fairly!) grateful.

My 5 speed auto box has slipped a couple of times in first gear. It revved up to about 4500 rpm and then suddenly banged into second (Eeek). I've not had the car long and it has done 140K so I'm probably due a transmission oil and filter change in any case.

You've probally got the same problem as I have had and am still having. The reason mine did that was because the electrical connector at the transmission end leaked out over a litre of atf. After this was replaced and the atf replaced the first gear slipping problem was resolved.
I posted this link a while ago... is this the manual... http://transmission.articles.mbz.org/akp722.pdf

A tired MAF can cause these symptoms.

Thanks guys. It has been behaving itself today so perhaps I'll just keep and eye on things for the time being and see what occurs. It looks like mine is the 722.6 box and it does have the W/S switch.

It's interesting to read that the gearbox should be sealed for life and never need a fluid change. Surely no oil will last forever?

Nothing lasts forever, although some things can last so long that it feels like forever. Sounds a bit like a meeting I went to in Cardiff last week  .

Certainly not. Gilly is quoting US MB internal instructions in following thread. Be warned, not for the faint in heart:

Could there be an ongoing issue here that MB are not inclined to face up to?

If this "sealed for life" nonsense (and I think from that post plus everything else we know it must be nonsense) started about the same time as the extended drain engine oil fiasco in the US began, then could it be another problem.

Particularly interested by the comment about filling the transmission to "max" not "normal". Bet that does not happen at a routine service.

Thanks for your input Guys. That's certainly given me food for thought. If Mercedes can't make up their minds what chance to we have?

It has been behaving itself all this week so far (about 500 miles) but I think I will go for a flush an oil change within the next few weeks. I bought the Merc over a newer cheaper model based on the Mercedes reputation for long life. Anything I can do to help protect my asset must be money well spent.
