Automatic Rear Windows not working

to No.1 brand in reliability
I've got a baffling one. Both the rear windows have stopped working for at least 1+ years now. I have checked the fuses (in boot) and the last time a mech was asked to look they said both motors are goners. All why-havent-you-fixed-it aside, the reason why its baffling to me is - I just got back the car after it was in workshop for an AC diagnosis. The AC has been fixed. When I was driving back from the mech, I popped up the sunroof then as I picked up speed I noticed a windy sound from the rear and looked- the window behind the driver was ajar by 3 cm. This surprised me since I knew it wasnt working so how can it be down. In a moment of hope I wishfully pressed the window button to wind it up expecting nothing to happen, but I actually heard and observed it nudge up and for a moment and for the life of me I also think I saw it almost at the same time nudge back down! Then nothing. After that moment, it didnt budge nor make any more audible noises when I pressed the switches. No matter whether I switched the child proofing switches ON or OFF.

Now is this possible? Has anyone experienced the same? Is there hope the motors are fine if so what can it be that has disabled them? Interstingly when it stopped working, both stopped working at the same time which really baffled me, but I'm sure the fuses are ok and switched fuses too to make sure.

So to temporarily close I thought perhaps I can manually force it up by pushing up on it when I got back. I did and it actually went up but not entirely flush into the rubber so having the car washed woudl be an issue. If it can be moved like this, does it mean something has broken in the window mechanisms? Anyone know more about the whole system?

Believe it or not, one of the rear power windows is now working! Just like that, after at least a year of being non-operational. Was at a drive thru and in moment of haste hit the wrong power window switch and the rear window wound down to our surprise! Had a good laugh after that. But rear passenger side is still not working. The only thing that has changed is the weather getting colder..

as soon as a mechanic says "both motors are gone mate" you know they havn't  The chances of them both going at the same time are NIL

dont know where you need to start looking but I do believe there is hope for you ;)

I'll guess that the wires feeding the motors have broken,

open the rear doors and you'll see a rubber sleeve, pull that to one side and pull on the wires to see if any come astray or if your jugggling with them makes the rear windows work.

On the W124 series it's a green wire on one side of the car and a green and yellow ( If my memory serves me correctly) on the other side.

If you find a break then just splice in a new section of wiring and everything should work fine

I've been meaning to take the rear door trim panels apart to see the workings inside. Need to find the procedure ... hope its here on the website somewhere.

Found it: HOWTO: W202 facelift rear inner door panel removal

So does that mean you got them working after the old problem?????

If so How??

hi check the rear window lock button is working if you have one....this disables the rear windows i use it when the kids are in the back messing around with them...

I'd go for either the switch unit or power relay being faulty or bad connection.

Both motors will not break down together. It could well be that a bit of lube is required on the motors though and the friction is overcoming the torque.

Well as I mentioned earlier below I didn't do anything and it just started working one day - if anything it was the change in weather. It worked as the weather was getting colder at the start of the oz winter at the end of may this year and now that we came out of winter into summer it stopped working!! I'd like to know what in that door could possibly be affected by the heat? mark.t, mate - its nothing simple like the child lock switch c'mon ... Dieselman, thx for your suggestions would you reckon heat be a contributor?

Almost a year later. Still haven't resolved this then again its low on the list. Car is back for annual service and got the mech to take another look. Without spending taking apart the car doors, he says perhaps better start enquiring for prices (2nd hand pref) for newer switch control unit the ones on the centre console near the gear knob whilst he looks into it more. MB oz wants A$669 and says its a unit for all 4 switches plus door mirrors! Anyone closer to parts know if my UK model C220 uses this control unit with 4 switches and its part number? Where can I get 2nd hand units in UK?

On some cars the switches do get loose connections and it must be worth having a look first, do you know how to take the door cards off to see

I did find a posting in these forums referring to removing the door cards but have not attempted it. I have taken the centre console wood trim surround off and seen the switches but I know little about testing those. When you say switches loose connections, are you referring to the centre console or the door ones? I guess if I had to choose I'd say the door ones cos in comparison with door slamming and all they're more likely to go wrong?

I just finished a how too on this, will have it up later on to day.

Thks will look out for it - as I am particularly concerned about removing / jerking the door handle off as first instructed!

Quick one, MB here in Oz said that when it comes to replacing the rear window control switches in the centre console, I have to get the complete control unit that includes switches for all windows and the side mirror! I checked Television's Detaili site and can clearly see separate part numbers exists for the front and rear window switches for the centre console region. Can anyone confirm I can purchase the rear window switches part number 2028205310 separately?

Are you really sure that these switches are faulty as it is unusual for them to go wrong.

They can be tested under load by using a headlamp bulb with two wires soldered on and by using the car battery, this way they are tested under load and better than a meter
