B-service

Hi Bobby Dazzler,

I was told that the seals had broken and that I am paying for new ATF, electric plug, filter and I think oil pan. The gearbox is not leaking oil onto the floor, its just that it is around the plug and oil pan.

Does this mean anything, a year ago I noticed twice that the gearbox didn't want to change gear. First time I was driving in town and put the car back into neutral then back into drive. The second time was a couple months later and the same thing happened except on the motoway, so I eased off the accelerator and then reapplied it and the gearbox changed gear. Nothing like that has happened since than, however now I am being told the gearbox needs a service.

I have heard mixed things about wayne gates some good some bad.

I have done some rectification work on cars after they have been to wayne gates.

But have spoken to other people who have been there and are happy with the service they got there

Hi,

What sort of work have you had to rectify?

Do you carry out repairs to ML163 chassis?

Jdokal

Various repairs from poor wiring repairs to airmatic pumps and engine faults.

Yes i carry out repairs to ml163 chassis.

Just been looking back on your previous posts why are you having the gearbox oil replaced as i put rough details in the mercedes ess system for your vehicle and it does not require gearbox oil changing.

Well, the gearbox seals are broken and the electric plug is flooded and the oil pan has been covered in oil.

Which gearbox seals if he is on about the main gasket i have only ever seen a couple of these leak.

It will look like it is leaking if the plug connector is leaking as it runs down the seal to the back of the gearbox.
Personally i would replace the plug connector top up the oil and then clean the whole thing of and go from there as if it isnt leaking from the gasket it is an unnecessary expense for you when it doesnt need it replacing

He is replacing the plug connector up to the circuit board if that makes sense? Do you have a garage locally? What is it called?

Yeah i know the plug connector he is talking about but does not require the other gasket replacing.

My company is called prestige car diagnostics, i am mobile but also work from home if the job is too big to do outside the customers house

Also i am in northwood

Hi, your in Northwood? I live in Northwood! Where abouts are you in Northwood?

Just down the road from northwood football club what about you

I charge £265 inc vat for a B

Just been speaking to MB-Gatwick as the car is on it's way back from a B service. I was checking up on a couple of things that needed doing and asked how much the bill was - £265!!!

That might include a discount to the lease company, but very spooky...

Just down by the iron bridges if you drive away from mount vernon towards northwood hills

Spoke with MB Warrington for my 2000 e55 amg and looking at their system on the previous service history they quoted me £499 including flushing the brake fluid. Car just hit 91,000 miles. Not sure if its plus vat. When I asked about the gearbox fluid they said there shouldn't be a need but quoted £220 for changing the ATF fluid and filter if I want.

Is that too much considering its a dealer? I am definately going to take them on the free inspection/health check. The car will also need the brake pads doing which I've got brand new in boxes (original) from ebay and they said they would be happy to use if needed doing.

Should I spoil the full MB history? I will never sell the car anyway.

Not sure if its plus VAT  - so +-£75 or so is not a problem?

Get a firm best price (inc VAT) with and without the pad swap.....then compare it.

does anyone have a list of things to replace/check on a service B? at 146k

cheers

On the ML270 CDI,

for the B-service: oil, oil filter, what other parts are required?

Jdokal

Definitely shop around - even between MB dealers. Give the mileage to your dealer and ask that they tell you which additional items will be required, and ask for a breakdown for the service itself, and then each additional item separately.

Additional items are the mileage related stuff like spark plugs (not on a diesel though ;)), brake fluid change, transmission fluid change, etc.

I did it for my C32 in the Summer of 2009 and found this variety - all are MB main dealers:

Most expensive (an MBUK owned MB main dealer): £980
B-Service: £495
Fuel & air filters: £310
Brake fluid: £175

My usual (franchised MB main dealer): £459
B-Service: £280
Fuel & air filters: £127
Brake fluid: £52

Other (franchised MB main dealer from a different group): £445
B-Service: £275
Fuel & air filters: £125
Brake fluid: £45

I ended up using my usual franchised MB main dealer. Actual final price was £379 for B-Service, all filters including fuel filters, brake fluid change, ATF level check, STAR scan, valet (a good job too), and a thorough shakedown.

I supplied the oil which cost £43 for 8 litres, which is about half the cost of buying the oil from the main dealer. If I'd not needed the additional items - only the B-Service - and supplied my own oil then it would have cost £199, plus the £43 for oil from CostCo.

The two dealers closest to home - one MB Retail one MB Franchise - both refused to budge on price, weren't helpful when I called and quoted more than double than I actually paid.

Should make a mental note to call dealers tomorrow...

Finally got round to calling a few dealers for servicing our ML270 CDi.

Exactly the same pattern of events as described above. The two most local dealers - one MB Retail one MB Franchise - were both unhelpful and unwilling to do a deal. Tell a lie, MB Retail said that if I find it cheaper elsewhere then they'll see what they can do - too late, lost the sale.

I've spent many many thousands with the other unhelful dealer - they changed their service front end staff, and relationships appear to count for nothing. Very strange.

I've only used the dealer I've refer to as "My Usual" for about 18 months, and it's part of the same Franchise Group, but they seem to want to do business. Even stranger!!

So here are the scores on the doors for the ML270 CDi:

Most expensive (an MBUK owned MB main dealer): £464
A-Service: £240
Air filter: £90
Coolant: £134
Negotiated a further discount: £NIL

My usual (franchised MB main dealer): £315
A-Service: £200.99
Air filter: £53.20
Coolant: £76.27
Negotiated a further discount: £15.46

Other (franchised MB main dealer from a different group): £414
A-Service: £249
Air filter: £65
Coolant: £100
Negotiated a further discount: £NIL

Supplying my own oil will reduce the price further. I only asked "My usual" about how much it would reduced by and he said it would be about £250 if I supply my own oil.

No prizes for guessing who I placed the booking with...
