Just got a call from them.

They've checked over the gearbox and can find no problem.

However, they have found that the air pump is up the duff and are quoting me £580 for a new one (excludes 10% discount) and 2 hours labour (with a 40% discount).

I must confess I'm not too convinced as I would not expect the air pump to make that noise [metallicy screeching noise] and would not cause the difficulty in switching from Park to Reverse.

I never thought they were so much !

Further update ....

After the last call (see above) I asked them to re-look at the gearbox - as I was not convinced.

They've just called me back to say that they've re-looked at it all and see no problems (or potential) at all. They've re-oiled and greased it, etc, etc as a matter of course but bottom line see nothing wrong.

I re-explained about the thump putting it into Reverse from park and the difficulty in doing so (but not this morning) - so they've said just to monitor it.

Can someone confirm that the air pump would have absolutely no bearing on it whatsoever ?

I'll be going to get the car later - so I'll probe them for more details/info.

Just had a thought on my way back from work. Ok I know its quite unusual but here goes. When was the last time you changed the filter in your gearbox? If I can get the pics to work I will post pic of said filter. As for the air pump? I would suggest that if all your doors lock and your headlights go up and down then the pump is ok. All lines to the box are vaccumn.

I don't honestly know when the filter was last changed, but I think/hope that it was at the last service (6/7 months ago) - where I requested that they go over the whole car with a very fine toothcombe.

In addition to that - I would hope at the very minimum they checked the filter this morning when they were going over the gearbox.

Yes - the doors do all lock and my headlights certainly do go up and down. Having said that - from vague memory - twice in the past few months when I unlocked that car only the drivers side opened.

Ok, have you by any chance topped up the gearbox fluid, mix something incompatable and it turns pink.
