Beaten by the weather

I dont care if it floods.

At the first sign of a thaw im going to head up north!

:D

I had a massive slide yesterday morning on the way to the garage where I completely lost the car trying to slow down going down a small incline by Crystal Palace football ground. Stopped by drifting gently sideways into the kerb much to my (and others) relief as alternatives would have involved insurance claims and trips to the bodyshop...

Roads are horrible around here - having spent 2 hours getting back from London Bridge on the train earlier, the side roads and pavements are now covered in a couple of inches of compacted snow and ice and given the local topography, my car will be staying at Honda Croydon where it is currently being fixed until things warm up.. especially as my neighbour's A124 has been abandoned half across the driveway despite our best efforts to shift it last night :(

3 year old Junior B is loving the snow though :)

Mrs E sent home today early to pilot the Cytrix implementation her company has finally got round to doing after last year's debacle. Seems to be working OK (Olly, she has your email :) ).

Only downside is, she'll know what I get up to during the day and I'll have to put a decent day's work in for a change!!

My car is booked in the dealers next week for some software fixes and the steering recall but unless it thaws big time by then I think I will end up changing the appointment.

Is it me, or does the country seem to come to halt everytime we have a snowflake??? I'm not denying it's bad "up north", but I'm sure as a kid we saw snow halfway up the front door, but everyone carried on, went to work, the schools stayed open and although we grumbled about it, it didn't stop the country. Last year I got stuck in traffic in Chelmsford for four hours, all because they didn't grit and all the Chelsea tractors could do was spin their wheels. If you drove gently, it was fine.

Personally I think it is all short term monetary issues that stop the councils spending money. We save £10,000 on gritting and it costs the country £50,000 at least in lost production (not to mention the increase in accident rates), but hey, the head of the council has come in under budget, so let's give them a big bonus!!!! Sorry, got a bit carried away there!!!! rant over.

Having said that I'm over in Florida too, the question is, will the country be open when I get back, the week before Xmas???

The snow isn't too bad here, but the conditions for my planned 400, mile round trip to Esher today made for staying put.

I can't remember being beaten by the weather before, and today's abandonment was because of Mrs Ringways' incessant nagging about how dangerous the trip would be, whether by road, air or rail.

I would have prefered to travel and have done with it.
I can lend you the Unimog if like buddy. You'll most likely get there OK. Only problem is that after 400 miles you probably won't remember your own name. I speak from much experience. :o

I have tried to move the Insignia this evening. Managed about 2 inches. Given the way I am feeling, I think I may be in for a couple of days worth of shovelling. Alternative is to forget about doing any work for some time looking at the forecast.

I think one of the biggest factors is that people tend not to live too near to where they work anymore, so by definition they travel more .
Just a little example-My Dad used to manufacture Combine Harvesters and the foundry was less than a mile away.
He now works away around the country......

Even when work is closed, those of us who can work from home still end up doing some work - I know I have!

The forecast is indeed dire - however next week is forecast rain all week with temperatures above freezing (for here at least) so that should clear it all up nicely. Well, the 4 foot of compacted snow that fell of my roof might take a bit longer, but at least the roads will clear.

I am meant to be headed to Banbury for a GTG on the other forum then onto Weybridge for this one.

I see no issue yet with not making the journey, although the Weybridge one might have to die the dead as it looks more trecherous in the East, but North Oxfordshire/South Warwickshire does't look too bad, and I have checked forecasts/travel reports and nothing adverse for M6/M40

I work from home permanently. But given what I do I need to be out and about seeing property, or I run out of paperwork to do eventually. It's like a roundabout. If the inspections stop, then so do the invoices. Being self-employed I am focused that way...

......

Sweetpea has put his finger on a big part of the problem.
For most of my working life, I lived 4 miles from the big metal-bashing company I used to work for.
I cycled it.
I could go on the bus ... Door to door.
I could drive it ... If I wanted to.
Those bar-stewards who run the world decided that this work would be better done in the Far East or Eastern Europe.
So ... I now travel a minimum of 60 miles a day to earn an honest crust.
All the useful products I used to make are now imported ... Many of them purchased for government contracts
I'm sure that many others could tell the same story.
Madness !!
(Actually, it's just a small part of the madness)
 ... Crazy

Yes Steve it's not too bad in Warwickshire. There is a heavy frost expected on Thursday evening (-10C) though. The roads to Gaydon are clear but watch for ice on the final stage of the minor roads as there's little gritting going on them.

Light snow here but it is very icy and so so cold.

Too cold past 4pm to work.

Went out on the quad this evening. Brilliant fun but my hands hurt from the icy blast at 70mph

Frost is good, means no more snow, too cold. I will be on MAJOR roads all the way, M6, M40 and the main non mway route from Banbury to Oxford.

Should be ok.

Main roads are currently clear here in Sheffield - they must have gritted the living daylights out of them. However, we have LOTS of snow forecast for tonight and tomorrow, so whether they are passable in the morning or not is another matter.

If my work is open I will be walking because the hill I live off is far from a priority road and so will not be gritted or cleared at all.

Not me - defeated that is. Got out today finally so freezer is replenished and I'm a little more relaxed. Did take fitting and refitting snow chains though...
And actually stopping and waving the car behind me past. I then sat back about 100 yds and watched it swarm all over the back of 3 other cars. Truly clueless.
