belt squeel after jet wash. W124

What you need to do is to work out why the spring came off - they don't just drop off for no reason! Is the spring OK, are the hooks at the ends OK? Are the bars over which the spring hooks at each end OK?

There's no adjustment to make to this system - you put the belt on, you tension the tensioner with the spring, and that's it.

The tensioner is just the arm which the lower end of the damper, and the spring connect to. All it is, is a pivot, with the spring pulling one way, and the belt the other, and the damper there to prevent excessive vibration. If the arm pivots OK, and the tensioner bearing spins OK, then there's nothing more that needs doing there.

exactly. it all looks fine so it is a mystery to me. i have just tried to put it back on and i cant stretch it long enough so how it 'slipped' off is very strange. particularly as it coincideded with the jet was. very suspicious...

any tips of how to get it back on apart from using leverage.

If you look at the upper plastic mount, there's a nut and bolt running through it. Take this nut off and push the bolt out until its clear of the mount.

You'll find the plastic mount can now be rotated clockwise about its pin, rotated far enough to enable you to slip the spring over without needing to strain it at all.

In the top of the plastic block, you'll find a hole. Put a 3/8" drive extension bar into this hole, and use it as a lever to rotate the block back to where it began, thus putting tension on the spring.

With the block back in place, push the bolt back through. Relax your hold of the 3/8" drive extension, and tighten the nut. Job done.

number crunchers description is word perfect. took me about 3 mins thanks to his instructions. just to add one thing for anyone looking at this in future, the nut and bolt that need to be undone are both 13mm.
