While my W215 (CL500) was having its tracking done it was pointed out that both tie-rods were bent.

I was surprised, so was the chap doing the work. Any clues as to how something so substantial got bent?

For clarity the tie-rod is connected to the steering rack at one end and to the track-rod end at the other.

Cheers,
Nick

Thanks for the quick reply

It's item 10 that are bent. I dread to think what else would be damaged if the track rod ends (item 15) were bent further - they are castings, so unlikely to bend.

Could frequent bumping over kerbs have anything to do with it? Or a careless towing hook-up? Pure guesses, as I don't know the model and am no technical expert.

In which direction are they bent? And are they bent in similar fashion on both sides. This might give a clue.

Been jacked on? Or as you say, Careless towing? Winched onto a recovery trailer?

It difficult to say whether it was towing, jacking or whatever. But they've both been replaced now, so it feels a bit safer.

In fact it feels as safe as it did before I knew they were bent ;)
