just bought an 1999 petrol vito was wondering is the petrol engine bespoke for this model or does some other MB model also use it ?

This is a Vito 113 (2.0)? IIRC the engine is a version of the M111, which was quite widely used in other M-Bs of the period (C Class and E Class). They were all RWD though (as opposed to the FWD 638 Vito) so I doubt the engines would be directly interchangeable (different mounting points and probably location of some ancillaries).

c class shared this engine without Kompressor.. l had 2 vito 113 with 2.0l with a 5 speed box never had a problem sold one with 485 ,000 used it for building and its still running, the taxi industry used the 113 auto a few years back and they were pushing 800,000 -900,000 k with very little problems . auto box and clutch for the manual the only parts were changed .

The M111 engine was one of the strongest engines Mercedes produced in recent times apart from a minor problem with the ignition coils which is easily overcome. The commercial version may possibly be configured to run on lower octane fuel[ lower compression ratio ??] . The 2.2 litre car version produced 150bhp.

Forgot to add it was found in 1800,2000 and 2200 cc's capacity and the highest output versions had variable camshft timing on the inlet camshaft.

coils ? what minor problem is this ?

The ignition coils are housed inside the cam cover along with the high tension connections and low tension wiring from the ECU. After a time these tend to get " cooked" by engine heat causing insulation breakdown and coil failure. Coils are relatively cheap to replace but coil failure can knock out the engine ECU ignition output transistors meaning the ECU has to to be repaired/replaced.
