Hi all, seeking advice to buy a best motor oil suitable for my car, 2004 C200 CDI, auto, 139k miles. Thinking about Mobil1, but which one is the best for my car? Thanks for your comments.

Mobil one is indeed the best. What ever you choose the best oils have the 229.5 MB spec on them.

I have always liked Castrol Edge Oil..

I know some people cannot feel any difference between various brands of Oil but I definitely can !!

My favourite Diesel engine oil ever is the Millers fully synthetic.

You need to contact Millers to check that your engine is suitable ..

They have a brilliant advice section:
Millers Oils

Hope this helps you

For my last few services I have used Carlube Triple-R 5W40 Turbo Diesel Fully Synthetic Motor Oil it meets the requirements of: API CF, ACEA A3, B3, B4 MB229.31/229.51. Carlube have been selling engine oil and car products for many years. The cost is around £25 for 5L.

The most important thing, which ever oil you choose, is that it meets the appropriate MB spec for your engine.

I asked about Mobil1 at my last b service at my local indie and they said they dont use Mobil1 as much anymore and now use Total as this apparently reaches the same spec as Mobil1.

As Black55 said...

My car was serviced initially by MB dealers who used Castrol, then Shell Helix Ultra. It was last serviced by Olly (Black55) who used some other brand of 229.5 oil. I am not sure about the brand he used, but my car is not an AMG and I am not fussed as I trust Olly completely to provide the right oil for my car.

So it is really down to you, and in essence any 229.5 oil will do. But if you do care about oil brand - and want the 'best' - then you can't go wrong with Mobil-1. Some other oils may be just as good, but Mobil-1 is definitely a 'safe' bet....

(also, some newer diesels require low-ash 229.51, but I am not sure if this is applicable to your 2004 car)

The "best" oil for your car is (i) a full synthetic that meets MB229.5 and (ii) is not vastly overpriced.

Watch out though because increasingly oils listed as sutable for your car (and other diesels of that era) on databases are actually MB229.51 oils. Nothing wrong with them but they are designed for EU4 cars and have a different additive package and so tend to a shorter service life as well as being a bit more expensive.

For me, Mobil 1 from Costco meets both tests!:thumb: Think I paid about £24 for 5 litres last time.

Wow that must have been on offer or something at the time was it?

It was £23.99 +VAT so that would be £28.79. That was their standard price, hence my comment about vastly overpriced full sythetics.

Trouble with Costco is that they tend to have lots of a limited range: thus last time I went wanted to score some Mobil 1 ESP for an EU4 vehicle and none to be had.

The .51 (as opposed to .5) is for cars with DPF.

The owners manual will specify which you should use - mine is 229.51, not 229.5 (and that's confirmed in the manual).

thanks very much for all the answers and opinions. my owners manual refers to 229.1, 229.3 and 229.5, so according to that i have ordered a mobil1 oil with MB 229.3 approval. i will let you know how it is worked out for me.

The label on my engine ( E280cdi ) says 229.31, but i don't have a DPF:dk:

Is it just me that that gets wound up with the many 'which oil' threads?

The oil spec is in the owners manual and I constantly want to post RTFMFFS:wallbash: (ReadTheFeckingManualForFecksSake):wallbash:

Sorry and I don't mean to annoy anyone but the owners manual is there for a reason.

My pevious car, a 2007 E320 CDi used to have a sticker in the engine bay that also said to use 229.31 or229.51
Yet my car had NO DPF (Thank God), so I used the 229.5 versions..

Just check your car doesnt have the DPF fitted.. If it doesn't then any 229.5 oil will be fine.

While we have the attention of oil connoisseurs, can you tell me if choice of oil will make any difference to the sound of tickover on my diesel C350. At the moment, it sounds like a tractor when cold and using VPower diesel has made no difference.
I have no idea what oil is in the car as it only nine months old, but I bought Castrol Edge 5w-30 for topping up. It has MB 229.51 on the label, and hope this is the right one.
What sort of improvement do you guys experience with, for example, Mobil 1? Is it worth asking the dealer to use this one at upcoming service?
(By the way, what is DPF??!)
Thanks...

All diesels are noisy when cold, particularly modern common rail units which can sound very tappety, its quite normal. DPF = Diesel Particulate Filter.

Thanks, I accept that diesels are noisier than petrol. It's just that Mercedes (mine anyway) seem embarrassingly noisy (everyone comments on it!). I can live with it, but just wonder if different diesels or oils can lessen the impact.
