I guess Autocar cited those as being providers of similar performance at a similar price. They did mention that others using similar tech were considerably more expensive - presumably the hybrid Porsche, MacLaren and Ferrari.
I get the feeling that BMW have built the i8 to showcase the technology and their prowess with it as while the plug-in hybrid's appeal lies in reduced running costs (at the VW Golf type class) it's hard to imagine anyone shelling out £100k is going to care too much what the fuel bills over a year are and it's not as if it's endowed with a massive fuel tank and therefor a fantastic touring range. One for the early adopters and/or those compelled to visit areas where ICs aren't permitted without financial penalty - which brings us back to the running costs!
My guess is it helps shift i3s. I am impressed by it though.
