A friend of mine has just bought a 16 month old 530d from a main dealer.

He's been told that as an approved used he gets a 12 month warranty from purchase date, which would take him to month 28.

Surely even as a used car it's covered by the 3 year manufacturers warranty, i.e 36 months?

What do the panel think?

I would think the orriginal warranty is transferable as per MB, so yes, 36 months from date of registration, the 12 months from dealer would be for a car older than 2 years.

That's what I think.

When I bought mine at 2 1/2 years there was 6 months MB remaining.

I tend to think he's misheard.

I suspect he has the benefit of both.

Salesman has probably just not engaged brain, and has assumed car is heading out of warranty.

The car has the balance of the manufacturers warranty left. The AUC thing is an irrelevance as the car has over 1 year on manufacturers cover anyway.

If there was only 4 months left of warranty, the dealer warranty would top up to 12 months to give the customer the warranty for 12 months. Thats what happened with me with my first Mercedes which was only 2 years 6months old when I got it.

Could it have been an EU import? If my memory is correct the manufacturer warranty was 2 years and the UK arm/importer topped it up to 3 years.

I think it's best to buy a nearly new car from a private seller. Cheaper car, full factory warranty.

This makes sense.

But if buying a nearly new MB or BMW the amount of money involved is likely to be quite high which increases the exposure should there be hidden issues relating to the vehicle or if there is an issue with the transaction.

Or even buy from auction in these conditions?

Always perform your own HPI check and pay up any outstanding finance yourself, that way you have complete protection.

It's 3 years with BMW from new regardless of owner transfer. Not sure (and not relevant to me as I drive low miles) if there is a maximum mileage restriction.
