Getting my bonnet, front bumper and grille re-sprayed to correct some nasty stone chips. I have been quoted £1500 inc VAT and 4 days to complete. Does this seem reasonable?

P.S - I am not after the lowest quote as you tend to get what you pay for, just ensuring this is about right.

cheers

seems a little on the steep side , id expect south of £1000

Your quote sounds extortionate.

I paid £350 for the bonnet to be done at a quality bodyshop.

£150 per panel would be about what I would expect to pay. Maybe £200 max for the bonnet or the roof.

The local MB dealer bodyshop wanted £800 to do the bonnet.

I would not expect it to cost more than £500.

£1,500 does seem expensive.

I paid £200 for mine when I had the Jag, though that was just the front panel without the bonnet. Oh, and it was non-metallic which I suppose makes matching/blending easier.

I really hope that £1,500 isn't the going rate! Was thinking about getting mine done, but at that price it's significantly more than my cars worth! :D

thanks for all the advice and glad I checked :thumb:

I will get some alternative quotes.

I would say £650-£850 depending on where you go.
Bonnet £250
Each wing £100 (blend)
Bumper £200
Grille £100
Strip and fit £100
How I would see it

I wouldn't pay more then £200 per panel, maybe £250 for a roof or bonnet. Look elsewhere bud.

A lot depends on the quality of the bodyshop and its equipment. No matter when I discuss this I am always told that the bodyshop in question is top notch and does work for the Queen blah blah blah, but that fact remains if you go to a bodyshop in a backstreet garage with no dedicated passive certified paint booth with proper extraction and proper curing facilities then you will not get as good a job as one that does have that sort of set up no matter how good the sprayer.

That's why some cost £500 and some cost £1500 for the same job. If you are happy with the finish and work from the £500 shop go for it. :thumb:

Sorry but I don't completely agree with this, some just try it on when they see an AMG badge.

Cost isn't just the paint its the amount of preparation and stripping/refitting.

I'm a proponent of the "get what you pay for" saying, as I have work done by 3 paint shops depending on the cost/quality of the work required.

Modern, water-based acrylic paints negate a lot of what you have said. Any bodyshop can afford infra-red lamps for drying.

Some great advice from everyone. Following my first post I have got some additional quotes and they vary considerably. So far £650 to £1,600 :dk:

All say they will remove parts rather than prepare and paint in situ, but will they?

Should I go with gut feeling, quality of workshop, types of cars they work on.......
