born again biker - maybe

The Biker section of Pistonheads is significantly larger than the Mercedes section of Pistonheads - worth a look.

Fabulous to see so many other Motorcyclists in the MB Club!

Hi there,

Mainly owned Kawasaki's myself. just don't seem to be able to move from them. Fab marque with solid engines and reliability. The ZZR600 is a perfect all rounder and as fast or slow as you wish. Comfortable two up and for touring also. 50 mpg but also has a crazy top end for a 600. They've been around for years so you can find one for any budget. Loads of spares around too. I loved mine.

Now on a ZZR1400 which is definitely not for inexperienced riders. But one of the best bikes ever, for everything (MHO)

As other have also said though, for kit... pay as much as you can afford. NEC bike show starts this weekend. I am going on Sunday (but in the Merc !!!).

I love my Alfa Spider for open top motoring, fab fun but nothing can replace the raw experience of biking. What ever you decide ... welcome to biking and ride safe !!!

I've had bikes off n on over the years, I tend to get them, use them a bit then they're stuck in the garage either in the way or depreciatin. 18 months is my general keep time then I go a few years without one but always lookin on ebay/bike trader at them, the urge never goes away.
My 4 years No Claims Bonus expires soon & I'm thinking/looking at maybe something for £1k that won't depreciate in value a awful lot n won't cost much to tax/insure with the intention of just using it as n when I feel like.
The clothin thing puts me of quite a bit, In Winter it's too wet/cold etc then in summer when everyone says/thinks that it's great bike weather, you have to get wrapped up like it's a winters day ! I always look at a biker in work on a Summer day when we are waitin to clock off, I'm in my shorts, t-shirt & flip flops and he's got his helmet, leathers n boots on.
But that urge is always there !

Hi All. As you can see from my post count I am new to the site. Just looking through the posts and came across this bike related post.

I have been a biker for about 40 years and I am just about to put bikes away, hence the purchase of an SLK 320. This will be our (the Mrs also is a biker) bike replacement. I have had a number of bikes over the years, the last being an ST1100 Pan European. There is one bike that I have very good memories of and was lots of fun. That was a Honda VFR 800 (pre V tec). It was a fantastic bike. Gear driven cams, pretty quick, good handling, easy to ride and looked good too. I would have one again but now I am getting on a bit the comfort of the car and weather protection has a stronger pull.

Good luck with your bike purchase and go carefull.:thumb:

Refresher lesson now booked for next week :)

Lesson went well. I'm very glad I did it now, as I was very rough for the first few hours. Thankfully they were on some private tarmac, practising slow speed control. We went out on the public roads after lunch and now I feel at least competent and safe enough to test ride a few bikes. I think I'll get a few weeks practise riding my own bike, once bought, before booking another lesson to further improve my skills.

I've put a deposit down on a 2007 Honda CBF600 ABS. It's not the worlds most exciting bike, but it's relatively cheap, easy to ride and hopefully suitable to gain some more experience on. :)

Off to the Bike Show this w/e to buy a helmet, jacket, trousers and boots :)

Good on you! The Honda you're buying is a nice middleweight to ride and has enough performance to scare you (if you wish), but is relatively undemanding too. A good choice. Regarding clothing, don't buy anything you're not certain about just because it looks like a bargain at the NEC. There is some seriously good rider equipment out there, and also some real rubbish. Deciding which is which isn't always easy, especially if you're pressuring yourself to buy something because the offer might not be available tomorrow.

Nice choice, is a 2007 last of the old shape or first of the new?

It's a 2006 model, so I presume a last of the old shape. I paid £2250, which from my research seemed a fair price for a bike on 25k. Time will tell of course.

Attached is a photo - can you confirm the model please :)

Good 'sensible' choice, but you can still be a bit of a hooligan :)
It will probably outlast you! Ride safe and enjoy it.

I had my first commute to work today. I'm not sure I'd describe it as enjoyable, but more, a challenge met and completed. The ride out on a busy windy B-road, against the flow of traffic all I had were dazzling headlight lights and a misting visor. I took the longer motorway route back home which was much easier and I think my preferred route from now on.

I've also learnt that my trousers are a bit too short and ride up above my boots. Also that my helmet has some excess wind noise, which being modular, might be expected.

I need to improve on my hill starts and clutch control and also at times my road positioning drifts when going around bends. But on the whole it's feeling good.

Roll on spring.

Two suggestions: 1) A Pinloc or FogCity insert is the best way to stop the visor misting; 2) Start wearing earplugs - especially if you're riding at motorway speeds.

Cheers. My visor has Pinloc :) I think I was breathing too heavy at times and didn't always open it when approaching junctions (too much else to think about). Plus it was full of finger prints, which added to the reflections. As I relax it should improve.

Earplugs is a good suggestion :)

Hi guys, second post here. Nice to see some bikers and MB drivers in one place.

Sounds like you've made a good decision on your choice of bike, congrats.

Ive had a Suzuki GS500 for 6 years now, i really love it but its so down on power for me now. Ive been looking at R6's, probably an older one as i did a track day couple of months ago and really want to thrash it round a track and dont want to spend to much money, in case i end up in the kitty litter again.

Anyway you'll get used to the riding soon, my mate passed his test in January this year, he was like you worrying about all the visor misting, blinding head lights, road surfaces and cars with no indicators:eek:. 7 months later hes getting his down with me around Donnington Park. :thumb:

Hope you enjoy it.

my TDM850* is slowly rotting at the back of the garage. Cant sell it as my late father bought it for me as a present for passing my degree - then he snuffed it. thinking of a lightweight crosser - serow225? as a 'pop to the shops' thing. 5 mile max distance, got to be leccy start, light, 4 stroke, simple.

*with 20bhp nos, kent cams, dyna coils, straight through exhausts, k&n stage 3 kit, k&n filters, single sider conversion....
