Well, I've gone and done it! My C63 will shortly be a Brabus.
After much deliberation, helped along by the fuel of the DR520 mentioned on other posts, I have decided to purchase Brabus' latest piece of kit for the C63.
Originally, the only Brabus product for the C63 was a B63-S kit which gave 530bhp using different air filters, metal catalysts and an ECU upgrade. The only probelm with this kit is that it cost over £9k + fitting
This was way out of any reasonable question however in the last week, they have officially launched the B63 kit (notice the lack of an 'S'!). This is very similar except it does without the metal catalysts and is not fully derestricted - the tight sods restrict it to 300km/h (188mph!). You will notice this is almost exactly the same spec as the DR520 and I have read elsewhere that the DR520 may be a Brabus modification - it's more than a coincidence that both the DR520 and B63 options have been released at virtually the same time!
I think this performance capability will be enough and will satisfy my desire to have the '63 engine deliver the power it was designed to. The kit is also less than half the price of the more expensive B63-S version.
The sharper ones of you will notice that this still means it costs in the region of £4k. For an ECU remap
Am I mad?
Well, possibly. However, this is still significantly cheaper than the DR520 appears to be (fully loaded and with leather dash, my Brabus'd car is still £6k less than the DR520 would be fully loaded). There are a few reasons why I think this is worth 3x the price of the Kleeman or DMS options:
1. Warranty - Brabus kits in the UK are fitted by Mercedes main dealers. It therefore has no effect on the warranty and in any case, Brabus offer a full 100k drivetrain warranty which also covers any consequential loss. No other company can come close to that and when I've just paid what I have for the car, this is worth the peace of mind.
2. Proven - Brabus have officially quoted outputs and performance figures (try 0-60mph in 3.9 seconds
).
3. Reflashing Module - Brabus supply a module to each owner to allow them to put their car back to standard or re-instate the tune should it be accidentally deleted during a service. With any other company, you would need to go back to them to do it and even if they did it free of charge, it's still not as convenient as doing it yourself.
4. Its BRABUS - is there any other reason needed? They are the most respected tuner of Mercedes and brand itself is worth some of the extra!
So, the question is, what do I badge my car as. I get new 'Brabus' and 'B63' badges to replace the rear 'C63' and 'AMG' badges as well as 'Powered by Brabus' badges for the side to go under the AMG 6.3 emblem.
The side badges will be going on as they are very discreet but I can't make my mind up on the rear - do I keep the standard C63 AMG badges or do I put the Brabus one's on? My concern is the B63 part and any association with a B-Class (stupid, I know)!
I have put a vote on for this to get peoples opinions.
