Buy or Hire???

I have managed to get myself in a strange position, my Wife has been asking to change her car for a couple of months and then a friend of a friend called me and this morning I agreed a price and they paid the money into my account today and picking it up tomorrow!

My E55 is in the bodyshop and is pretty much booked in for different bits and pieces for the next 3-4 weeks at various workshops so won't be of much use.

My son went back to Uni and is now in a house and so took his car with him.

So the front of my house come tomorrow will be bare and we face the problem of not having a car, even looking for one can be a pain without transport.

The obvious thing is to hire a car but that is likely to cost at least £1500-2000 and knowing me a hell of a lot more for the 3-4 week period or should I go buy a car with a view of selling it on within a month?

I was thinking of something in the sub 5k mark that way I can discount for a quick sale and still save some cash.

Even as I type it seem a stupid idea and I should just hire one! So what do you think great idea or should I come to my senses?

buy something running with an MOT on ebay for a few hundred. tax it and then flog it back on ebay when you finish

Have a word with a local hire company rather than one of the big boys, you'll probably get a good rate if you're wanting it for a month. I needed a car just for the day a few weeks back and rented a Ka for IIRC £22. Not exactly luxury motoring but got me from A to B, & was much nicer to drive than I was expecting. I reckon they'd probably do it for £100 a week with a bit of haggling. OK, you'll have to slum it for a bit compared to the Merc but it's cheap wheels..

Cheers,

Gaz

Probably need to add some criteria, I have 3 dogs, 2 kids (+1 Adult at Uni) and my wife.
What with Football, Rugby, Horse Riding and Hockey at the weekend (and thats just the wife  )the reality says a 4x4, Estate or people carrier which is part of the problem on the rental as it pushes the price up quite a bit.

Now buying also becomes a problem as at the bottom end of the market, I have no issue with driving around in a cheap car as long as it doesn't end up in big bills!

You'll get a nice Vivaro six seat crew van for circa £3k.

I'm with the others.

W124 for a bag of sand and then who cares what you sell it for?

I'd buy a cheap Honda CR-V or a very cheap 210 Estate
