I only have a 2.3 W210, it has monoblocks with 265 rears so there is quite a lot of grip but I have noticed this change in weather has shown the Bridgestone tires achilles heal, they are poo in the cold as far as I`m concerned, should have just gone for the Michelins, however there was enough grip to do a Boxter away from the lights on shear grunt, coupled with the fact that I was watching the lights go orange for the other traffic, then I put 4K on the tacho and let the clutch engage slightly and warm up, when ours went orange I let the clutch out a little more, more revs, clutch fully out, little bit of wheelspin when I got off the Shell surface, flashing light on the dash, second, bit of spin, cut in to claim the lane. Mr boxter was not happy as he could clearly see the dents in the side from a Corsa that happened a while back that I have not sorted out yet so he is sat there thinking, 25K on this car and I get thrashed by a beaten up 10 year old Merc with a smaller engine!! tough poo - learn to drive. I probably didnt help as when he pulled up along side me at the next lights where he was turning right I made an `L` shape out of my fingers and put them on my head aka the emporers new grove. This is also the way I dropped an Audi TT the other day, I think he had an auto though as he did nothing until the lights went orange and then just floored it, my engine had about 5 times the momentum by this point and I did him too, this is what puts me off the E55 though, as I could be beaten by a good driver in a smaller car which has a manual box

Ha Ha - not very likely - speak to Grav about the E55 - buckets of torque which is what counts, just stamp on the gas and watch them disappear in your rear view mirror !!

coudnt agree more there

On shear grunt you're way down against a Boxster. Be thankful he didn't know what he was doing ;)

Evidence if it were needed that ANYTHING can happen on the street! :)

Boxster, not Boxter!
I have corrected the annoying subject typo!

Glad its not just me who's pernickety. :)
It concerned me that a porsche owner may one day search the forum for historical records of boxsters coming second to mercedes in street-drag and they may fail to find this thread! Now they will :)

why bother?

he probably didnt want to try to race you. Maybe he is a careful driver.

I very much doubt he was bothered at all by your "victory".

sorry for the slight flame here, but I don't see the point in these drag races off lights - they are dangerous.

i have had people egg me on for a race in the past. I tend to just let them go. They probably go onto a forum somehwere and say "my nova beat a CLK or whatever"....

fuzzer, I re-conned the box a while back so while I had it off I looked at the clutch, it has thousands of miles left in it yet.

silver saloon, the reason for posting such a victory is for comparison in future over what car does what should anybody consider purchasing one in the future, thats why there is a whole section for this sort of thing you yourself must have been looking in to notice this thread am I right? I believe I am. And believe me he was trying due to the tyre squeal, A sure sign something has broken the limit of traction and as I said in my original post his face at the next lights proves he was bothered by my “victory”. Racing away from the lights is not dangerous, carrying too much speed around corners and flying off is far more dangerous which I see a lot where I live. Racing away from the lights only puts strain on my car which I pay for so I don`t see what that has to do with you as I sign the cheques, If you don`t like the contents of this folder please do not look in it in future.

Sorry no offence intended. :o

i do see the value of a comparison between cars, but my point was that maybe it shouldn't be tested on public roads. Ok, so u both floor the cars from the lights, trying to be in front of the other one.... can u honestly say that if a child ran out in front of you, you would be able to stop in time/or react the same as if you accelerated normally? without wheel spinning etc and concentrating so much on defeating the guy & your rev/speedo rather than what dangers may be lurking ahead? i reckon this sort of thing should be kept for the track.... and i suspect Mr Plod would feel the same if he saw u.

ok, so i dont pay your bills but one day someone may just step out in front of you. i say that because it sounds like u do this often.

we all speed etc, so do i sometimes, and often i suppose i have bouts of "madness" where i think, "maybe i shouldnt have done that manouever", but its the boasting about it and similar things like racing gets my goat... it is all in my humble opinion tho, i agree its nothing to do with me, but it's a public forum and i was just replying with a point-of-view.

Should i will only reply to posts if i agree with the original poster, otherwise not reply? or if everyone did that would that make for a boring forum?

My pal Adrian, who used to import Jap cars at the height of the jap boom had a traffic light GP in slightly damp/cold weather a few years back.

He was in a twin turbo 300zx which had been stupidly chipped and came up alongside a 3000gt mitsu....

Anyway long story short, Adrian stamped on the gas and the car fishtailed down the road, first clunking the nearside of the 3000gt and turning it around and then bouncing off 3 parked cars, more or less totalling the 300zx.....

Oh how we laughed........

I chose not not have traction control on my Boxster - well it's for wimps, innit? - and boy do I regret it with the greasy salted roads at the moment.

Coming out of side streets, going round bends, I have to take it VERY gently. Maybe that's why he didn't race you.

By contrast my C270 gets the power down much better and the 245s on the rear very rarely light up the ESP.

Yup I was quietly following a TVR Cerbera the other day, he was going at a reasonable speed on the straight bits but slowed to a crawl for every bend and roundabout. I guess he'd had a "moment" before and didn't particularly want another!

No traction control on the C250 either, which is fine...until the turbo chimes in.

Still, the car park becomes more entertaining when you exit it on opposite lock every night

I just have to remind myself that it's much more on the track days without traction control!
