Hi all. Do excuse me if there is another post on this ( I saw one a few weeks ago but spent hours trying to find it again to no avail). I have just bought a nice 93 c180 and the wiper works ok but just parks when switched off mid screen. How do I rectify this. I was planning to disassemble anyway to grease the wiper.
Thanks John

You will have to attach Pic. B1 and B2 togeather as the were origionaly one picture, because of there size I had to cut them in two.

wow. can't get a clearer explanation than that.
Matter of interest is the wiper arm is splined how does the arm shift park position 60 odd degrees. Is it because of spline wear and slip, blades freezing to screens???

I'll have a crack this weekend many thanks.
:bannana:

You have answered your own question, Yes nut 1 and nut 2 are splined but I think it is possible for the nut to slacken off, you can see from the last Pic. that the splines are very fine, maybe Mercedes want them to slip, if for example the blade is frozen to the screen when the wipers are turned on.

If you proceed to fix this yourself,… http://members.lycos.nl/mbenz/windshield_wiper.htm before you remove the assembly you need to make sure that you first park the wiper by turning it on at the stalk for a couple of (WET) sweeps and then turn off at the stalk, the blade should return to its correct park position, of course in your case the blade is going to park elsewhere on the screen, it is the motor that you are actually parking, when the motor is correctly parked, it will be in line with the V mark as in Pic.A top right Don’t move the arm at Nut 2 if it is in the correct position.

Grease the balljoint when you are in there and IMPORTANTLY, the mechanism under the “turtle shell” cover. See HOW-TOO section
THE MECHINISAM IS VERY POWERFULL KEEP IGNITION KEYS IN YOR POCKET WHEN WORKING ON THE ASSEMBLY.

PS,That link is for a left-hand drive car.

Do you mean it parks wherever it is switched off or always parks in the same position.

If it parks wherever it will be the park switch.

wiper fix

cheers for this , has helped a lot and taken away a little of the fear...you know the fear when you get half way though dis-assembly and wish you hadn't started, but usually cant turn back!

cheers for great post.

Another great informative thread - my W210 (98 plate) balljoint next to nut 2 has popped off (I assume it was frozen when the missus tried it) I used this and other wiper threads to get access to click it back on while in situ - but it keeps popping after a few wipes. The linkage seems lose - is it likely that nut 1 is loose or could the arm have bent and the whole thing needs replacing? Just summoning the courage to take the whole thing out - which I know I got to do either way.

Thanks guys

If the linkage seems lose then hopefully that’s all that is wrong, a loose nut.

If the ball joint can be detached and reattached very easily then it’s likely that the cup part of the joint is wore down, the cup is made of some sort of hard plastic/carbon fibre? That part can’t be got (New) separately.

When the ball and cup are reunited you should hear a click
As you say, you have no choice but to remove the mechanism to investigate.

If you check the linkage/motor and all appears to be ok then it will probably be the wiper motor at fault :thumb:

Thanks Dec - I'll take it out and let you know - it does click so hopefully just the nut - but I'm never that lucky!

Thanks again

Just an update for courtesy and not to bore anyone - Dec was right, the plastic cup had worn and the ball did not click in place, pity cos everything else still worked perfectly. Bought a whole scrap unit off ebay for £35 delivered and re-fitted today, everything working well.

Thanks for the knowledge, all you wiper thread contributors, specially Dec!

hi all

my wipers started getting stuck and gave up

I took the unit out and its the motor that has gone, the rest is fine

I have just got a new motor and before i fit, is there anything i should do with the motor before i connect it to the wiper part, such as plugging into power and running it to set to home / park.

i say this as i printed out the pics from this post (which are fantastic by the way) which seem to say that the motor has to be parked first then connect and adjust nut 1 to park the wiper blade

apoloiges if i have got the wrong end of this but just want to get this sorted

Yes Mark, park the motor, as follows;

= plug in the new motor… don’t connect it to the mechanism yet.
= turn on the wiper switch to normal speed for a few seconds, motor will run.
= turn the wiper off AT THE STALK SWITCH.
= Wait a few seconds for the wiper motor to finish its cycle and come to a stop.
= remove keys from ignition, motor is now parked.
= fit new motor to mechanism via 3 bolts.
= connect nut 2 and tighten it up, make sure the V mark is in line with the short motor arm.
= adjust nut 1, if necessary, so as the alignment marks are lined up as in first picture above.
= the rear of the mechanism should now look like the first picture above, refit and test.

hi again

Dec - followed your fantastic instructions and works like a dream

for anyone that wants to know, the wiper motor was brand new off ebay for £70 inc postage so all in all a good result

thanks so much for your help

mark

I had this done today, explained it to the mechanic and it worked a treat - thank you.
(I'm not allowed near spanners, or matches...)

Thanks

I joined your forum today intending to fix wiper not parking correctly. I followed the instructions here and found Nut A was loose. Tightened up, lubed everything, refitted and all working correctly. Total 30-40 minutes.
I also watched this video on YouTube which helped too:

Many thanks.

Thanks very much Dec for this very clear and helpful post I joined to sort out this problem it worked was told I needed new motor. Thanks again . Johnte

Just a foot note which may help someone, My wiper on my 98' W202 on two seperate occasions began to slowly get more and more 'sticky' until eventually almost stopping. my fix was really simple... I got a dab of teflon grease (for RC cars gearboxes) and smudged some on the wiper 'piston' as it was moving (wiper cowling removed), it was tricky but it soon freed up and was fine. the second time I worked out an easier way to apply the grease. 1. start the wiper and when its 1/2 way i.e vertical, turn the key off. whilst the wipers up like that its really easy to grease the 'piston'. hope this helps someone.
