This may not help you with your current issue, but I think you should reconsider how you go about maintaining your car.

Getting the ATF change in one place and the engine oil at another isn't the best way of doing it.

MB cars have a strict maintenance schedule, comprising of alternating 'small' and 'big' inspections (aka 'Service A' and 'Service B') respectively.

I suggest that you strike a relationship with a reputable Mercedes specialist, and take the car there once a year and let them do everything that needs doing according to the manufacturer's maintenance schedule.

The advantages of doing so are:

- Service A and Servicd B are more than just a basic engine oil and filter change, there's a list of things that get checked in addition. A specialist will have the relevant check lists to hand based on your car's mileage and age.

- A specialist will have access to the Mercedes Benz central computer, and will be able to update the car's Digital Service Book online. This means that your car will have full service record, which will also help you get a better price for it when you sell it.

- A specialist will also update the car's computer with the details of the service carried-out, so the onboard service computer (aka ASSYST) will accurately display the correct code regarding what is needed at the next service (e.g. Service A5, or B1, etc), and when it is due.

Thanks for the info. The guy that I used to service the engine is someone that I have been using for a while on previous cars. However he recommended a specialist to do the ATF and that's what I'd done 3 weeks ago prior to getting the engine oil changed this morning. Strange thing is the specialist is In business here in Belfast a long time! I guess my pressing question is, is it a big surprise that it could be the case that the fluid was changed without the gasket and filter also?

Hi all,

New to forum and Mercedes. Have just purchased a c class 2011 2.1 cdi and looking for average price from indy to change fluid in the gearbox??

Thanks for that. I actually paid £300 which included a box mounting replacement. I've just had the engine oil done this morning by a different mechanic and he pointed out that the gasket hadnt been changed on the box and he obviously says its highly doubtful that the filter has been changed. Since this is my first automatic car and this seems like a stupid question but would a Mercedes specialist change gearbox fluid without replacing the gasket and filter??
I’m confused why you are asking about a price for work you have already had done...

Short answer - no

if you didn’t agree the scope of work before it was done I think you little / no comeback

My quote recently for indy to do mine inc filter and gasket was £236 at £45 per hour and 2 hours which I thought was very good. They emailed the quote over so I have a record of what was going to be done and exactly how much but I'm probably going to do the job as I have really bad trust issues from people working on my cars and also worked in main dealers with bad experiences.

I also need to do the sump gasket and sealant on the upper sump so working all this out I should be able to do all the jobs for less that the Indy just doing the gearbox.

Might take me a day to do it all but I will know a bit more about my car at the end of it.

Since you’ve got the quote in writing, might be worth ensuring that they will also drain the torque converter (and preferably also the heat exchanger in the radiator).

Incidentally, is your car an S204 220CDI, or an S205 220d?

Hi Brian,

You've obviously read the about the escapade I went through recently. I got the car sorted on Wednesday morning and witnessed some of the work being done. This guy did have a machine that flushed the box that looked like he was connecting into pipes to drain out. Also as other members have said he used new bolts which seemed to be very brittle and a thorough clean of the pan.

Mine is a 2011 S204CDI although Im thinking I might be wrong if you are asking me?

If I go down the Indy route I will check on these details. This is my first Merc so I have no knowledge about the Indy in question.

Was just wondering regarding the car as listed in your profile - the S204 (2007-2014) Diesel was called C220 CDI, the S205 (2014-current) Diesel was called C220d.

All changed now and requested a change of user name too so to avoid confusion!

Sorry to hijack the thread and Im glad you got it all sorted. I started using an old mate of mine that I knew for 20 years who opened his own garage but the last 2 out of 3 jobs I found loose bolts etc (not wheel bolts or anything serious like that, rocker cover bolts) so Ive lost all trust in him now. Obvs just setting up on his own and very busy and rushing doesnt help. Also it wasn't him that did the work the last time it was a mechanic helping out so he isnt all to blame but still doen't help with my confidence.
