C class 200k cam chain gone at 100,000 miles

The chain had jumped a good quarter on the inlet side, it was so worn its a wonder it ran at all.
You could put a spanner on the cam and move it, slipping teeth.
:eek::eek::eek:

Holy crap! So the root cause was worn teeth on the cam sprocket?

I remember seeing one of these with barely a few thousand miles, only a few months old, that threw a valve...

As Jay says it is in essence a Mitsubishi designed engine that Mercedes then tweaked....but clearly not well enough.

Shame as I think the previous generation of Kompressor engines are bullet proof.

Well I have some more progress.
Cams are back in and the sprockets fitted, with new chain and guides etc.
Covers back on with the MB sealant.
Timing chain the first time I was not happy so with a new link I now have the timing 100% and with the chain link tool on lone from my MB dealers made it easy to rivet the link now I have found the V cut in the back of the block that is.
Coolant from MB is back in and just have to fit the cam cover, add oil and start it all being well.
I seem to have lost a bolt in the cam housing, or I think I fitted one at the back under the frame that was not fitted before so need that to move on.

All back together and running a treat.
The sprockets from M271.co.uk are a work of art and allowed it to be cost affective to restore this coupe.
So glad I did this and not just fit another engine as it would be just the same, at least this way the poor design sprockets are engineered out.

Well it been driven a few times now and it's a different car.
Mill light just come on so now need star.

Just home after a good run, engine light on?
All seems good under the bonnet, temp stays good, nice clean exhaust, plenty of power.

Good work.
Do you mind me asking how much it cost you all in for the parts?

I have drove all day in it today and all is well, I still have the light on so no idea what that is yet, I will get it on star asap.

Sprockets £500 the pair
Head gasket £28 From MB parts
Valves £12 each from MB Parts
Chain and tensioner £122
oil
filter
Cleaner
Seals
Chain guides around a tenner each from MB Parts.
Gaskets etc
So not to bad in parts, I will swap the plugs and there £40 the set and change the oil and filter after a 1000 miles.
