hey guys im new on here...and i recently purchased a c-class c220 cdi sport 2008 reg. I was just wondering that kind of MPG other c class owners are getting? im only getting around 25 mpg which im pretty dissapointed with. i look forward to your replys.

Do you drive in town a lot.

A car like that on a run should do 50mpg approx. I'd expect in a mix of driving to get 40odd mpg

I purchased a NOV07 C220 CDI Sport on a 57 plate in March 2010.So far I have covered almost 7,000 miles and the MPG since start is at 40 mpg. This is a mix of town/motorway.The best I have achieved is 52 mpg on a run from Manchester to Newcastle although I did nurse the car at 55 mph to see what it could achieve.

28mpg does sound very low unless you are doing a lot of short runs only.

Im getting approx 600 miles off a tank doing a mixture of driving. I think that averges out about 45 mpg.

I have the 2008 C220cdi Estate. The computer is not particularly accurate on mine varying from 1% to 8% optimistic. The best check is on a tank/tank basis. Mine has now covered 25K and the average consumption on a tank/tank fill-up check has been 42.82mpg. Single tank checks have varied from 38-48mpg. I must admit that I tend not to use the car for very short trips around town. The average consumption does take a real hit on short journeys and around town.

i have also recently bought a 2008 model (08) C220 CDi sport - I've been very impressed with the economy - in fact it has exceeded my expectations. On Motorways I am achieveing 52-54mpg. On a 450 mile run to Stevenage and back (from lancashire) last week it achieved 51.4 over near 8 hours of driving at an average speed of 57 as there was some A road and some town driving in there too. This computer reading was backed up by refilling on return and working out this way produced also 51mpg

over the 2000 miles I have done in it (bought with 18,000 on the clock) it has averaged 44.7mpg and again my (rather obsessive, accurate recording of fuel and miles - for expenses you see) show this to be pretty much spot on accuracy wise.

some notes tho:
it isn't economical until it has warmed up - not at all and short runs kill it - that said the worst I have ever seen is 34mpg on a school run
it seems more economical at 70mph than at 50 - cos at 50 it has a bad habit of running itself into 4th gear - the computer will not allow you to put load on the engine below 1400rpm so it changes down.
there seems to be a sweet spot at about 2200rpm which is about 72mph on the cruise control and this, for my car at least, is THE sweet spot for mpg - i don't know if this correlates with a peak in torque or something?
I have ran the last couple of tanks with Millers ecomax diesel additive in it - it makes the motor quieter and smoother (IMO) but doesn't seem to make a jot of difference to mpg (although the stevenage trip last week was the first long distance trek with it in the tank and the MPG did surprise me as there were some, ahem, faster moments on the way home)

overall I like the car and it is much more relaxing than the 325i BMW it replaces (and much much more economical) the build quality isn't as good tho and the steering is too light and you feel every little imprefection in the road through the wheel which is quite annoying - in fact I took it in to be looked at the dealers cos of this and I might take it back again, although they said everything looked fine!

I did a run in my 2010 C220Cdi today, Darlington and back (Hitchin, Herts.) 416 miles in total.

My figures were 57.4mpg at the 195mile distance (coffee break) average speed 66mph, 2hour:57minutes. NO AIRCON on way up. Few roundabouts on the A1M but no other hold ups.

Total 416 miles - dropped to 56.5mpg had AIRCON ON all the way back (was a tough meeting :) ) Journey back south was slower with more traffic, more accel to get past lorries etc.

Filled up last night before trip, and again when I got home - Actual mpg = 54.249 so 2.25mpg worse than computer.

I do drive economically, so these figures would be difficult to better. Agreed on the economy sweet spot being around 70mph. I know few will agree with me, but cruise control is NOT more economical than pilot in eco mode :) This trip was done without cruise control.

Although these figures are not bad, I used to get aprox. 5-8mpg better on my W203 C220CDi, and this thing is supposed to be fuel sipping BlueEfficiency......********!!!

Going to try some ECO tyres next time around, as mine has stock Dunlop SP Sport 01 on them, which I don't think are fuel saver tyres. ?!?! Oh, mine is an SE so has 205-16's, so little bit better than sport with it's wider tyres.

Car is still new, so might loosen up a tad, might get another 3-4mpg from her ;)

^^ wow! - thats great! - what speed were you sticking to (roughly) about the 70 mark?

57 is really good - do you think my sport could achieve that? or is it the bluemotion bit that does it? (mine is pre-bluemotion of course!)

Cruising speed is roughly 70-80mph (indicated)

Your sport will have wider profile tyres, which will hurt economy a little, and not sure what effect the sport bodystyling will have on drag co-efficient. Oh and mine is a manual, which makes a difference too.

I am not convinced about the OM651 engine (New BlueEfficiency). I quite liked the 'old' 220CDi engine, and fuel economy from the old unit was outstanding.

Do you want to swap engines? :) :)

i do drive in town most of the times....also i drive short distants alot.....i guess thats the cause :| thank you to everyone for replying.

Yes, short distances and town driving = poor mpg figures, although 25mpg is very low.

Next time you take it for a longer run, fill the tank up, reset computer, and log all the figures. If it doesn't return good mpg on a longer run, you might have an issue that affects mpg.

Sadly even an efficient engine can only do so much: When stationary at the traffic lights every car is doing 0mpg, unless that is you have stop-start technology

aha - it's a manual - that explains it and actually sheds some positive light on my auto don't you think? - I'm quite happy to only have had a loss of 5 or 6 mpgs for the auto-box.

I had also heard that there is varying opinion on the benefit or otherwise on the blue-efficiency engines over the previous (non BE) CDi units - I guess it is possible that it is all about emmissions and not necissarily MPG's would that work out? - My non-BE is quite a high tax band - it's £200/year - what are the BE units?

The next thing I'd like to hear is from those who have fiddled with their CDi - chipped or remapped - and again against BE and non-BE engines - what effect did it have on their driveability, smoothness, refinment and of course, efficiency and performance?

Too much to ask from a single thread?

To the OP tho - I still think you are way too low figures even for town driving and short trips! - my old 325i BMW - a 6cyl petrol - used to average above that for 100% town driving in my old job. if you really are only getting 25mpg you need to get it seen to and it 'might' be interesting to see what effect and additive like millers would do to what should be quite a 'dirty' engine.

Well the BE units are all about emissions, but the two go hand in hand.

MB claim 70.6mpg urban and 58.9mpg combined for my BE model. Urban is 45.6mpg. The fact I struggle to achieve urban figures on extra urban type driving concerns me.

VED on my BE C220CDi for this year is £0, next year it is £90. CO2 is 127

BTW, I have a Brabus D3S power box for OM646 engines. If you would like to try and are able to come to Herts. I would be happy to install it for demo :)

Also had me worried for a while! Auto v manual gearbox accounts for much of the difference. However I agree the OP's town driving figure seems low; I would expect c. 30mpg around town.

oh really - the brabus sounds interesting. does my car have the OM646 engine?

I do a bit of work in Herts...

probably still quite a bit of cash in the brabus box though?

Yes, yours should have the OM646 engine, you can confirm by checking sticker on top of the valve cover (underneath plastic engine cover. Just pop it off)

I was looking for £400 or thereabouts for the Brabus box. Takes engine to 220bhp (+50bhp) and more importantly increase torque across range, +80Nm max.

Good thing about the brabus box, is you can remove it and sell it on. It cost £1400 new :o
