Hi Guys,

Been reading with interest over the last few weeks since picking up my 57 plate C200 CDI which i think is a W203.

When the salesman gave his spiel he indicated that we should expect mid 40's to the gallon around town. Now i took that with a pinch of salt and figured maybe mid to high 30's, unfortunatly we only seem to be getting high 20's.

The car has about 28k on the clock and was purchased from a main dealer fully serviced etc etc so i would hope everything was in check but i am begining to have doubts. I trade in a 2.2sri petrol astra for the merc and the astra gave better Mpg than the merc is around town.

Hoping someone can advise.

Also been considering a tune up of some description as finding the engine a little lacking, i see some of the options quote a improvement in MPG too. Where would i stand with regards warranty with one of these and are there any systems that would be approved as such so wont give any problems with regards warranty. We took out the 3 year servicing package too so don't want to effect this either so something that will not be noticed or fiddled/blanked when it next gets plugged in.

Thanks in advance

Dean

My CLK 270CDi is showing an average of 48.8mpg in the 9000 miles I have owned it. I don't trust the computer though and from "full to full" checks think it is morelike 44-45mpg. I do have a straightforward 30 mile dual carriage run to work which helps. This is the same or very slighty better than my previous W202 C220 CDi.

If you are using diesels on mainly short journeys then you have got the wrong engine as they take longer than petrols to warm up and are uneconomical during that time.

It seems strange that thet W203 200/220CDi is not giving better...unless you have a heavy right boot of course.

my engine reaches the required temp in about 1.5 miles and them its a further 10 to work. my volvo d5 used to do 58mpg on the same journey when driven careful. Driven careful in the merc i can get 41 at best. Big hit in the wallet that difference! looking to get rid next summer now. Going to swing over to the XF D S or the bmw 325D/525D.

Mid 40s around town is being over optimistic.

My W203 200CDi (auto) does mid 30s in commuter traffic, has achieved over 60mpg on a long run and the computicle says 49.5mpg average over the last 20,000 miles.

It might be worth putting it on a STAR and seeing if there is something wrong.

I would check that again if I was you. Maybe it will do that during the summer, but currently my 320 is taking 6-8 miles to get up to at least 80c on the guage.

On a run, you should get at least 50mpg out of a 200/220. I used to average at least 48mpg out of my 270! My 320 will achieve 45mpg on a run easily.

As Kwakdonut, my 270 pushes out heat after approx 1mile but takes approx 7miles to get up to temp.

I get 38mpg around town and an easy 48mpg ave. On a good motorway rum I've managed 60mpg ;)

The 270 engine seems more frugal than the 220 200 cdi.

Although our courtesy car c200cdi regularly gets 50+mpg on the commute to and from work.

20's and there is most definitely something wrong.

Thanks for the advice so far guys.

Last night i took the car to Gatwick and back from sittingbourne and decided to check the mpg, taking in to account the i had driven in to work in the morning about 6 miles and then to Gatwick in the evening the computer was reading 42 on arrival at gatwick. I then reset it and drove home, 53 miles with a average of 48mpg.

Seems to me that it does not like around town work and especially when cold.
