Pulled up on both my sides (they seemed to be friends) were a VR6 and a Type-R, which looked modded. I've always wanted to race a type-r cuz i've heard they are really fast naturally aspirated 2 litres. Anyway we took off, and my gear changing happened to be really good at that moment... the VR6 slowly drowned away and leaving the honda (who got the jump) with my nose level with his front door, and it stayed like that all the way til about 80mph and we stopped at the lights. He put his window down and said "u just put ur foot down and hope for the best riiiight?" then to his amazement, i proceeded to explain to him that i was actually shifting with him.

2.3 supercharged vs 2 litre v-tech, on paper looks obvious... but i couldn't believe it, we were completely level the whole way. I put it down to the weight of his car, and the VR6, aren't they like 2.8/2.9? and quite light too? but his car was an N-reg... looked pretty tired... not sure

Was fun nevertheless!

VR6 is an engine rather than a car ... guess you mean a Golf VR6? Yes it was a 2.8, producing 174 bhp IIRC. It later got 24 valves which put the power up to 204 bhp (this is the engine my Sharan had), but these were badged "V6" rather than "VR6". It later became a 2.9 and is now a 3.2 as in the R32 Golf.

The VR6 engine was also used by Ford and SEAT, and Mercedes - it powered the V280 people carrier based on the old shape Vito.

Be surprised if the Type R was giving the full beans if you were neck and neck ...

C230K has 197bhp and weighs a fair bit more than a Type R which has 200bhp+ ... gotta remember as well that when you are shifting up ( even if you cane the life out of it you are shifting at 7k , he's still got 1.5k to go , if he's driving it properly )

Not doubting you or your abilities , but even on paper the Type R has the edge , just over 6 secs to 60 , not sure what the time is for the 230 but i think ( from memory ) its over 7 .... big difference ...

If it was modded as you say , then he definately wasn't giving it the full beans ....

The old VR6 wouldn't stand a chance .....

But , good race ....

Hello

I had a friend with a type R and at the time I had a BMW 330 convertible, I think on paper they were booked at 0-60 in just under 7 seconds, the BM was 245 bhp the type R 197. Bm though is a heavy car.

We did exactly the same as you an up to 3rd gear we were neck and neck (mine was manual also) once I went for 3rd the BM was pulling away slightly but we both gave up as reaching the wrong speeds...

I was quite chuffed as the Type R does feel quick when in it, the BM didn't feel as quick (much smoother engine) but obviously must have been.

One thing if its anything like damp the Type R has VERY poor traction front wheel drive and not even sure it had traction control.

I've even had a go with a type R in my ML coming round a roundabout and then straight on, kick down in the big bus I was with said type R to the speed limit, well chuffed as the big bus held its own...

:)

Which Type-R? Civic? Accord? Integra? NSX? All have different engines and power outputs, some have LSDs some don't...

Probably Civic...most common form of Type R...Even I was looking at one last week...

Ha Ha !!

It wont be an NSX Type R , thats for sure ... would have been gone into the distance before you could say 'Holy s**t !!'

:D

It'll be a civic ...

Actually i've got 6.5seconds from 0-60 in mine when i removed the air filter completely, but its usually 7 seconds in normal conditions, ur right, i was shocked too.

Just checked up the figures ....

C230K 193bhp 0-60 in 7.2 secs

Type R 197bhp 0-60 in 6.6 secs ...

So yeah , a close thing ...

You probably have a bit more torque than the civic , and getting the civics power down is gonna be a problem , it was in my old CRX VTEC , so what a more modern type r would be like, i can only imagine would be horrendous...

How I wish I was alongside you guys too.... ON THAT AERODROME.......cos I'm sure none of us would want to be stopped for "racing".....

I just cant wait til i get a proper job so i can start modifying mine! I'm kinda waiting for my catalyst to go 'kaput' so i can get a diff exhaust with possibly a ECU remap and a K&N air filter, and maybe get somewhere in the region of 220hp? :D

I enjoy 'racing' cars with similar power to mine, i never bother with any car thats no where near mine... unless its a clio/corsa/206/astra trash with a LOUD exhaust, purple xeons, blacked out windows and music vibrating irritatingly thru the £10 sub cramed in their boot and... i think u get the picture:D

I hate being a kill joy but unless you and your competitor agree on a means to start your so called race then there is no way you can fairly access whose car beats whose unless you enjoy pantomime humour. If you floored your throttle a fraction of a second before the other car thenh you will have a huge head start. How do you know they were racing and how do you know you both accelerated at the EXACT same time?? I think these types of posts are best suited to Barryboy sites, I enjoy listening to the acceleration of a throaty V8, I confess to enjoying the high speed acceleration of these caers, but to actually race on a public hiughway beggars belief, and to boast about it............ Who decides hen to lift off and when? In town the speed limit is 30mph; how long does it take to reach this speed? Or do we stop on the motorway and then quietly flag down the car we wish to challenge?

Regards
John

Having owned a C230K, I'll say that they are quite quick with very usable power (lots of low down torque, quicker in real world driving than they read on paper).

I'd be surprised though that all things being equal, a ~200bhp Civic or possibly even the (Golf?) VR6 would be embarrassed by a 190ish bhp W202?

I also thought the 0-60 time was more than 8 seconds for a standard 230K W202?

Anyway, be a bit careful out there, although these sorts of events are often daily occurances it doesn't take much for things to turn sour - and more often than not these posts end up in debates with criticism! ;)

The VR6 lost on all 3 attempts, only by very little, but he did definately lose. I also used to think c230k's weren't fast (before i bought it) cuz of all the 0-60 vids i saw on youtube. But then when i test drove this manual version, it was quite torquey, and i knew it couldn't be 0-60 in 8 sec, cuz i could that quite easily in my old c200 which was bloody old and knackered.
Both drivers did roll their windows down and state their shock... but i felt quite confident from the start... I've driven alot of cars and i dont fear naturally aspirated 2.5-2.8's, cuz they feel less torquey then this car (i was also looking at a BMW 5.28 before this car).

All in all i'd say c230's are quite underestimated.. and i'm definately gonna uprate the horsepower when i get the chance to cause more jaws to drop :P

I, for one, am not impressed by macho posturing if this is being done on public roads. Will is absolutely right in his forecast!

I must be old cos I totally agree with edgersoldchap.......... how do you know your road is not going to be compromised by a child running out? Someone not expecting a car at 80 mph to appear -- and for there to be traffic lights that stopped you - then you were obviously in a restricted speed area...

Heh there - certainly not intending to preach the self-righteous bit as I've had my fair share of points on my licence, especially on my motorbikes ;)

...but your tale kind of reminds me of a news item about a fatal RTI which took place local to me.

Remember to ask yourself why younger drivers usually get hammered on car insurance :)

In this case they weren't young (by insurance standards, both over 30). Pure lack of regards for the consequences of their actions:mad:

Like earlier posts, I don't see the point in these type of comparisons. If I wanted a FAST car, I would buy a Evo or a Griffith 500. End of story. However, we all buy the car we like the look of - and providing we can tick most of the boxes, we buy it. Performance is only one aspect of a cars appeal. There are far more important factors to consider than the age old "mine is faster than yours" point of view. Lets not forget, driver skill can turn a fast car into a very fast car and a wally can turn a fast car into a horrific accident.
