Well the plate *should* be on the door frame on the facelift w202 - I've attached a pic where you can just about see it on my last one so you know where to stick your replacement.

there is what looks like there should be a sticker on the drivers door frame but its missing so something was there at some point.

My log book vin says WDB2021882F666197

Yes thats the VIN that comes up for that reg number. Probably totally innocent as that options plaque on the slam panel also has all the correct options for that VIN number.

cheers guys for your help on this, well it looks like once i get my new shiny vin plate and fill it in i can get the old girl her mot... :)

Strange! I wonder if it's possible the plates from your car have instead been put on another. Yours may just have been an unsuspecting donor.

Is it that easy to get a VIN plate made up?

The vehicle is clearly a ringer,no one would have a legitimate reason to obscure it's identity.Doubt if any Insurance would be valid on it.You can't make your own Vin plates
either, that's fraud and will implicate you in it's dubious history.Your MOT tester could loose his licence too if he was to issue an MOT knowing it had a false/questionable identity(he should report it to VOSA).

You have a very laid back mot tester there, a few years back I was having my van tested and there was a problem with the car in fronts vin plate and the vosa were called and arrived with a flat bed within a hour ! The owner of the car who had just paid 8 grand for it was not right happy !

Have to admit it all sounds a bit dodgy. If you have the vehicles history it might be worth visiting the testing station that did last years MOT and speaking to the tester if he's still there... If they routinely check VIN plates and won't issue a certificate without one, then I question either the validity of the last five years worth showing on the website (did they relate to this vehicle or its clone, i wonder....) or the veracity of the vendors story...

I ran the VIN through the EPC to get a datacard (that VIN is invalid as it is missing the LHD/RHD code 1/2 prior to the factory letter but I assumed 2).

It shows a white 250 diesel with a black cloth interior. I guess it's up to the OP to check all the other details are correct. I can post up the full datacard on here if anyone is interested although it's already gone to the OP.

it seems vin plates are easy to get hold of for kit cars , trailers and so on.
so far everything checks out, i spoke to the last owner and he confirmed he always had problems with the car and to the owner before him, thats going back some 8 years...!!
the last but 1 owner was worried so had mercedes check it out and the confirmed the car was genuine and even the owner before me spoke to mercedes and they said it was ok.
i suppose i could go down the route of vosa but what would that result in, when i get its mot the tester will have a good look at it again to make sure the car is ok.

This is what the datacard says:

there is deffinatley an old marking on the drivers piller where there should be a sticker of some sort and wonder if that where it originaly was.. i contacted the last mot station that had it in 5 yrears in a row but the guy sadly said he has about 60 cars a day go through his garage and could not remember the car..... ;(

Is there an engine number? Does it match the v5?

The engine number is either stamped onto the rear of the cylinder block, near the transmission mounting face, or onto the front of the left-hand face of the cylinder block, depending on engine type.

The vin is not always located on the screen on the bottom nearside if as you say it has had a cheap replacement screen or if it is an import.
It should however be stamped on the firewall or bulkhead and also under the seat.
Most UK cars also had a black sticker on the B pillar of the drivers door shut.
The mot station should have checked the vsi (vehicle specific info) where vosa will list the places where the vin should be found and checked. Only then if all the above places do not show a vin can it be failed.
It does seem like a serious matter and if in doubt contact the nearest visa office for advice I think.
